despite them having their best season in how many years the circus continues

Apr 9 2010 by Jon Griffin, Birmingham Mail

Birmingham City owner Carson Yeung has slapped a £7 million High Court writ on David Sullivan, the Golds and Karren Brady in a furious battle of the St Andrew’s boardrooms past and present.

The Chinese businessman is suing the club’s former bosses, along with ex-finance boss Roger Bannister, over a series of extraordinary claims.

But in response, Mr Sullivan pledged to issue libel claims against Mr Yeung and club vice-chairman Peter Pannu and said he would counter-sue the new regime for around £2 million.

Mr Sullivan said: “Counter-claims will go in within four weeks for approximately £2 million and several writs for libel, against both Peter Pannu and Carson Yeung.

“Sadly, we’ve not been able to resolve things amicably.

“It will be interesting to see where Birmingham City are in two years time.”

Mr Sullivan spoke after the new Blues regime made a series of allegations, all documented in High Court papers, that he and the Golds breached director duties by “improperly enriching” themselves at the expense of the football club.

They also said payments to a British Virgin Islands company were approved by Mr Sullivan for £50,000 for scouting duties for the 2004-2005 season, £55,000 the following year and £120,000 for 2006-07.

And they claimed Blues paid an invoiced sum of £1.175 million to Sport Newspapers, formerly owned by Mr Sullivan and the Golds.

It was understood Hong Kong tycoon Mr Yeung, who took over Blues for £81.5 million last October, was angry to inherit bills and liabilities totalling £11 million, and believes he paid over the odds for the club.

Last November, it was reported that Mr Sullivan and David Gold were locked in a dispute with the Chinese regime over allegations they had taken a £420,000 advance payment to which they were not entitled for management consultancy expertise.

The High Court writ claimed cash sums paid to Mr Sullivan’s Roldvale Ltd company and Gold Group International Ltd represented “gratuitous” payments by the club.

It added that Mr Sullivan and the Golds breached their duties for the “predominant improper purpose of enriching” themselves through the Sport Newspapers payment.

And the writ claimed payments were made for scouting duties covering three seasons from 2004-05 to a company entitled Drydena Group International Ltd, based in the British Virgin Islands.

But it says “However, at no time had DGIL......provided any scouting services to the club whether as alleged or at all.”
