S-Platt Posted October 11, 2018 VT Supporter Share Posted October 11, 2018 Great appointments. The job is not too big for him as some fear remember we are in The Championship a league he knows like the back of his hand. If concerned about handling player egos then again fear not Terry will deal with that. I do not expect him to be an overnight success but I do think we will see improvement in football, tactics and coaching. If the players buy into the ideas then there is no reason we cannot get into the top 6 by the end of season. As a fan base we need to all get behind this and understand it might be a rocky road as their ideas are implemented.

Stick with plain pasta, that’s where reality is”.... “I’ll never marry a supermodel so I’ll just stay single and die alone. I’m not going to be crippled by hope” Has it ever crossed your mind that people can handle hope and the minuscule disappointment that will come when it’s shot down? I was mildly excited by the prospect of an unknown gamble, but equally I knew it was a risk, so when Henry/Faria fell through, I looked on the bright side that we won’t be taking on unknown quantities. There was no giant hole of disappointment. This ‘consider the worst and you won’t be disappointed’ attitude is so self loathing, and not at all a way for people to live. I’m chuffed with Smith, by the way. He was always the sensible choice, and there’s nothing wrong with that! Wow. Ok, I don't live a depressing life. I am a very successful enterpreneur that has visited over 120 countries and have built an amazing life for myself from nothing. Building companies up from scratch and spending my entire life travelling. So you can take that attitude somewhere else because you couldn't be more wrong. There is no need to get personal. The reason WHY I have become successful is because I know when to pick my battles. I don't hope for things that are totally unrealistic and OUT OF MY CONTROL. That's just stupid. If I can personally change something to make it better, or strive for something that I can achieve then that's exactly what I do. I'd wager that if you are looking for a depressing life then you might want to look closer to home. Above all, I was absolutely BANG ON with my prediction as to who we would get as I am very aware of our financial predicament and not so blinkered as to think that just because we are Aston Villa we can hire who we want. Anyway, I off to swim in my tropical hotel pool in my "depressing life".

What Ellis was doing in that era was the same as Lerner’s post-MON approach. Slightly unconnected, Tony Barton was a complete novice and managed two trophies, a league cup semi-final, and 3 points off 2nd in 1982-83. Also Shrewsbury were always bottom half of the then Div 2, where Smith has Brentford 6th currently.

But his key point in the Post wasn’t that bit, it was all the rest. Especially your idea that people can’t cope with the unhappiness that comes with unfulfilled hope...and that it’s better therefore not to hope. Apart from being a profoundly depressing view it’s mistaken...... .........I think 95% of the Posts on here ARE positive about Smith, and yet, in what must appear miraculous to you, they are from people who wanted Henry, Rodgers, and all the rest as well as those who wanted Smith. In football, as in life, Hope is a large part of the ballgame for many, and being able to meet the challenge of setbacks, or enjoy the moments of success, is what it’s all about. Do you think that the interviews were all carried out with a huge cabbage sitting menacingly on the boardroom table. Just as a reminder of the price of failure. The sack from Villa Park should be now always be known as being cabbaged. With any under performing manager getting a chorus of, “Cabbaged in the morning, you’re getting cabbaged in the morning.” Not that we will ever need to sing it now

Popular Post A'Villan
21 minutes ago, One For The Road said: What were you expecting? This is precisely what I said would happen. People see these ludicrous names being banded around and get all excited and then when soneone like Smith walks in they feel let down. We were never getting those names that were being mentioned on here given our current position. People didn't want to believe that what I was saying was true and really believed we were about to hire a Champions League manager when the reality was always going to be someone like Smith. I am very happy with Smith because I didn't expect anyone of a higher calibre. Others are now feeling let down. There's that useless "hope" I was talking about on the speculation thread. Hope is of no use when it's not aligned to reality. Given our limited resources and lowly standing, this is the best we could have got. He is a good, proven Championship manager with a good attitude and an exciting, attacking mentality. Which is just as well seeing as though we have no defence. I've read a few posts now where you talk about being real and pragmatic and that your judgements about past, current or future events are accurate. Firstly, good for you. More power to you in your endeavor to discern things for what they are. Reality is nourishment and ignorance venomous. Secondly, I'm going to have a little dig at your version of reality. I'll start by nitpicking then get on to what's more relevant to the thread. The very usefulness of hope is when it is not aligned to reality or what is expected. When the odds are stacked against you. "For anyone on the downside of advantage, it's possible." Without hope there would be no aspiration. To take a concept and have it materialise involves belief and hope before it has come to be. That is a very real and functional process. I don't know exactly what 'this is precisely what I said would happen' means. Maybe that you predicted Smith's appointment? Or foresaw fans expecting unobtainable appointments? It's not really important for me to know what it means. What I want to point out is that you mention expectation and the 'reality' of who was to be appointed. We have hired a former managing director of Chelsea and Liverpool, both Champions League calibre. A La Liga, Europa League and UEFA Cup winning director of football, also of that calibre. A Champions League and Premier League winning player turned assistant manager. Only Dean Smith is lacking experience working with a club that has experienced European or domestic top tier success of those four people, who now occupy senior management roles at our club. Correct me if I'm wrong but I am thinking that it was far from unrealistic to hope for or anticipate the appointment of any of the names that were being thrown around on VT. In the end I think an astute and appropriate appointment was made. You kind of suggest that Smith is the best we could hope for not because of some skill he possesses but because others wouldn't have come given our situation. Therefore downplaying the very real possibility that Smith was more favourable a choice than others who perhaps are of a higher stature. I guess if people are underwhelmed for whatever reason, that is their prerogative. I would like to think that this appointment has been made with the view to take us beyond promotion and reestablished in the top tier. I think Wes Edens presents as very down to earth and will endeavor to understand what is required for us to achieve. 3

I would though argue that you don't appoint a guy like Smith if you aren't looking to try and embed a similar structure and culture at the club. That can't all come from Smith but he is a significant factor in it. The club needs to modernise, it needs to embed a structure and philosophy and they need to do that to help support Smith and the future beyond his tenure. Yeah true. Agree with that. And the fact that he has specifically been appointed as "Head Coach" and not "Manager" points towards exactly that. I'm encouraged and excited.
