brommy
Of the 432 MPs voting against the government tonight, I wonder what the split is between those who see the deal as a betrayal of brexit and those who think they can push no brexit ahead of a no-deal brexit?

Popular Post desensitized43
I miss the good old days where a loss of this scale, on the only issue the government has been looking at for 2 years would be enough to see a government fall. **** the fixed term parliament act.

The no confidence vote is doomed to failure.

No. The Tories are the largest party, though don't have a majority (though they act like it anyway), hence the bribery with the DUP to command an effective majority. Meaning together they outnumber the rest of the house. The no confidence vote is doomed and always was.

If the government were somehow to lose the vote, as it's under the FTPA, the PM does not have to resign. The current government can seek to regain the confidence of the house in the 14 day window that follows - returning to put the question again. Or an alternative government could be found if the PM does decide to resign. I believe that she's under an obligation, however, not to resign until such an alternative can be put forward. Rodders
who was the minister foundering under andrew neil's questioning? Was it Raab? chap obviously got the short straw having to defend that mess
Chindie Posted January 15, 2019 VT Supporter Share Posted January 15, 2019 It's astounding a PM can lose a vote on a deal that she is indelibly tied to, by an historic degree, and not resign. Losing a vote that effectively defines them should be a resigning matter, losing it by an astounding degree should be resignation without a second thought. Absurd.

All the dicking about Corbyn Labour has been doing has now hit him in the face. He's been hiding in his shed, vaguely pretending to have some notion of "negotiating a better Brexit" despite knowing it is impossible, pretending to want an election even though he can't get one and now he's going to have to either oppose Brexit (which he actually wants) or support it and further reduce any chance of ever getting elected. The dickwad.
PompeyVillan
It's not a single Conservative or DUP MPs own personal interest to have another general election, because of this Brexit mess and whatever position they may have taken they may lose their seat in a GE. Therefore, they won't back a vote of no confidence. Nothing to do with 'national interest', don't believe a word of that. Simple self preservation. The EU won't renegotiate the deal, so the only options are for No Deal or a referendum. There is no appetite in parliament for no deal, because that would be a stain on national politics for years to come, so the only outcome I can see that makes sense is to have another referendum.
