Following the successful no confidence votes in Hoey and Field on the Labour side, the Tories have a bit less luck:

Quote

Anna Soubry has defeated an attempt to deselect her – as the association chairman behind the plot resigned his post. Guido has previously reported how John Doddy, chairman of Broxtowe Conservatives, was on manoeuvres to remove Soubry as the Tory candidate for the next election. Soubry hit back by reporting Doddy to CCHQ and accusing him of plotting to take her job. Guido now hears that at a meeting of the association executive last week, Doddy lost a no confidence vote 6-0 and he stormed out of the meeting. Doddy has now resigned as chairman with his tail between his legs

Conservative Home has Boris back in favour in their latest survey

Johnson was backed by 29% of respondents. ( up from 8% last month)

Sajid Javid was the second most popular (19%) and  Jacob Rees-Mogg came in third (13%).

just when you thought Johnson's career was finally over ........

The Conservative party system doesn't really work for him though.

If he gets through to the final two candidates then he's a shoe-in among the members. But he's pretty hated amongst the PCP, so it would be a massive surprise if his name got as far as that.

interestingly the last you gov poll had a lot of imagine xx is leader of the Conservatives , Corbyn  /Labour and Cable /Lib dem ..how would you vote in a GE

Corbyn would (theoretically) be PM if he was up against Gove ,Hunt , Javid or Mogg  ... if it was Johnson it tied them both on 38%  ....

the PCP might consider that when choosing a new leader  ,I suppose ?

Oh, absolutely. It's a moving situation, and they'll probably do the thing that they think is most likely to keep them in power. If that means nominating Boris then they'll hold their nose and do it.

The counter though is that his persona is now permanently welded to Brexit. The further round the u-bend that goes, the further they might go in the direction of someone who can say to the electorate "look, I told you this was stupid all along".

If the country is on fire next spring and May quits, Boris might struggle to claim that none of it is his fault ;)

SO he's the Tory equivalent to Corbyn, then....Hmmm.

It's a comparison worth making. The difference is though that A) he was the outlet for those on the left of Labour. Europhobic Tories have their Goves, Moggs and Leadsoms. If they want someone with the terrible politics of Johnson without the shameless, self-serving narcissism, they have choices. B ) Corbyn would never have made it to the ballot if those proposing him thought he had a chance of winning (some of those who nominated him have said as much). Not really the case here.

There's definitely a path through. I reckon it needs Reeg-Mogg to endorse him rather than running himself. Which I reckon he will (endorse, not run).

It also needs as few Brexity types as possible running. Apparently there are as many as forty MPs considering it when the time comes. Those who don't back Boris at the start, will mainly transfer to Patel, Raab, Gove etc keeping ABDPJ out of the final two.

It also needs two of three from Gove, Javid and Hunt to crash and burn. Gove has lost support massively since Chequers, but the other two have done well (from a Tory MP's perspective, not a normal human's perspective).

I reckon Hunt's current shouting tour of Europe about how everything is still the EU's fault is doing him the world of good with the base. Which is good, because it's precisely who it's aimed at.

I spend more time reading ConservativeHome.com than is healthy (any amount of time at all basically)

Anyone else note the astounding hypocrisy of the anti-semitism nonsense in the Labour party when the recently resigned foreign secretary can describe woman in hijabs as 'letterboxes'?

It's been quite openly pointed out that anti semitism and islamophobia is more prevalent in the Conservative party members than Labour.

So why not media storm, why no outrage, demands for the party leader to resign etc, etc?

Because 'the left' hold themselves up to higher standards and are disgusted at racism. Bigotry in the Conservative party is dinner party conversation, and hardly something to get your knickers in a twist about.

Because, I think it was Emily Benn that said, I would never vote conservative but I want to vote Labour.

Also because the anti-Semitism crisis isn't really about anti-Semitism. That's the kernel of truth that has been used for cynical ends.

There isn't the same desire in the Tories. And islamophobia isn't the sacred cause that anti-Semitism is, being more socially acceptable.

..., I'm equally against racism by anybody, from any party, towards any group. Clearly that's not currently fashionable. 'Boris' appears to have a free pass to be his usual nasty little bullying self.

He is funny, we do love him, the chubby little scamp.

I was thinking of having a go at some racism, just a little dabble, like. I mean, they say you should try everything once. So I was wondering which is the best of the two parties to join up with for a go at doing racism. I heard that the Tory one is better for learners, as there’s no need for any complexity, or subtlety to be demonstrated, but that the Labour version is more complicated and also involves more arguing and bog standard insulting and playground ganging up on people. It’s all a bit confusing. The Tory one doesn’t seem to garner the eager racist as much attention, either, whereas you can get loads of support for a bit of the Antisemitism, if you join the Labour racism scheme. Also the labour one costs like £3 quid to join, whereas an expensive Eaton education is considered the entry fee for the Tory scheme. Maybe I should give the UKIPs a try, but I don’t want to end up being party leader for a week like the rest of them. The SNP are no good, because I am English. Ditto Plaid Cymru.

ah sod it, I’ll stick to the Greens and being rude about people with big cars. The nobbers. Edit, this bit is true, the DUP is well beyond my level, I was talking to one today, and he was brilliant at racism. Proper dissed those Romanians, so he did. Too good for me to even aspire to.

From my own personal experience I spent a few years in Labour and union politics. I became a union rep and I 'specialised' in equality stuff. 3 years of equal opps painfully aware I was addressing people on the wonders of divesity and I was the straight white male in the room.

But over a total of about 8 to 10 years to varying degrees of involvement, I didn't encounter any racism that I recall. Not by reps and councillors. The general punter, they could be a random bunch.

A couple of years now of knocking around socially with a few Plaid types. Never heard them say a single anti english thing. Not by reps and councillors. The general punter, they could be a random bunch.

I don't think I know any out 'greens'. I only know one Lib Dem person and we once found him in a slightly compromised situation with an asian person and once with a Turkish person. So I'd have to guess he's fairly cool about race at least.

Of course, it could be that I need to re calibrate my racism radar.

Brandon Lewis, now so critical of Johnson's studied and calculated racism, himself fails even to reply to an offer to meet concerned Muslim groups, before it was front page news.  It's all about the PR and managing perceptions, and there's nothing behind it, is there?
