On page 111 of that link I just posted there's a post expressing concerns at the links with Ancelotti because of him not having a very good reputation with bringing through the youth. Then we went and got Mcleish lol.

Can you please advise whether you have, in fact, just read 111 pages of that thread today? Curious and concerned minds want to know!

This 'Managing Villa is a bad job, nobody would want it' is media fed bollox, look at the facts

Lambert was the Premier Leagues second longest serving manager with the poorest record of them all. Villa is an excellent opportunity for a good manager, they will be given time by the owner and the fans, unlike 90% of other premier league teams, money may be tight but the squad we have is strong and has been for years.

If a manager isn't good enough to get the most from the opportunity they have been given, to manage Villa, then they have destroyed their own career's.

Agree to an extent - but you can't argue with the fact that not many managers leave Villa to go on to bigger and better things (maybe only GT leaving for England), and not many actually go on to achieve anything of any significance.

Villa is the door to career suicide....its not appealing to successful established managers, its only appealing to those who are stepping up from lower leagues, or to those who have nothing to lose.

The Doc managed Scotland and Man U after us so he was an exception, Graham Turner had some success at other clubs, but generally its true. I think most people find it a very tough job mentally and are normally burnt out afterwards. This happened to Little and Gregory.

How many managers of similar teams go on to better things, David Moyes Everton to Manure? Can't think of many more. Fact is, Lerner doesn't sack managers without a very good reason, he gives them the best chance to succeed in the League, to date, but they still have to perform, if they don't then they have to go.

Well the point is, you have to compare like with like. You can't compare us to Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal etc. as for the last 20 years they havn't been shopping around for managers, they have either had long term manager in place or have changed managers and appointed big names....

The clubs that are simliar to us are arguably, off the top of my head -

1) Spurs - Hoddle went to England, Redknapp was linked with England

2) Everton - Moyes was there a long time and went to Man Utd, but it didn't work out

3) Wigan - Martinez left to go to Everton

4) QPR / Fulham - Hughes did well and left both and is still doing well

5) Stoke - Pulis left has done well since

6) Newcastle  - Hughton was sacked and went on to find employment although he did take Norwich down eventually! Pardew will do well at Palace

7) Southampton - Pochetinno went to Suprs, and Koeman looks like he will be great for them

8) Swansea - Rodgers went to Liverpool, and although Laudrup was sacked, his reputation is still in tact

9) Norwich - Lambert did well for them and left to take a step up to us

Obviously not every manager of these clubs have been a success, but they have at least had some managers who havn't been failures!

The only recent manager we have had who was a "success" was probably MON. He was linked at least passing with the England job both before and after he joined us, and when he left we had just had a decent season and his reputation was relatively in tact, at least with everyone other Villa fans.

The point is, if you were looking at the Villa job, there is not many people you can look at where you could say - "he did well, and then went on to do XYZ"

Any news? We have a cup tie this weekend which I'd very much like to see us win.

No news yet. I imagine that Tom Fox is still meticulously reading through each and every entry on this thread. I reckon he's up to, say, Post #43 by now?

Understandable. It's almost impossible to keep up with this thread even in the middle of the night.

Can't be arsed to read back but is someone seriously suggesting guardiola?

If so you need your head examining, immediately

I'm not saying we'd get him just saying that he'd be the ideal Manager take the baton from Lambert and carry on his good work and improve it actually.

Well, great.

And if we signed Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo we'd probably stay up

It's good this game isn't it?

Lambert to Guardiola would be an organic progession. Ronaldo and messi would be more of a shock to the system but as you say would probably keep us in the division.

Very interested in the historical perspective ...

For those of you who have been on VillaTalk a long time, is this thread's apparent lack of unanimity -- I mean, it's all over the place in terms of names -- typical with a manager sacking? Was there more unanimity when Lambert was hired? MON? Macleish? Are we being especially far-ranging in tossing names around this time?

when McLeish left it was very much certain to be Lambert. but HOullier and McLeish appointments we didnt really seem to have much of a clue and just said names from Solskjaer to Ancelotti

Solskjaer was the same summer as the Lambert appointment - VT caused his odds to crash after Trees told us that Randy flew to Norway.

We also watched an internet stream of a Norwegian league match together.

I remember watching a press conference entirely in Norwegian too

If we think logically it won't be Sherwood. He doesn't fit our MO at all. He wants loads of cash, complete control over EVERYTHING and he's a prickly character at best.

Not happening. I might start laying him myself.

Whatever floats your boat mate. I'd rather lay an egg than lay sherwood

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2950742/Aston-Villa-begin-hunt-new-manager-Randy-Lerner-wants-make-swift-impact-underachieving-squad.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=Sendible&utm_campaign=RSS

Aston Villa have begun the search in earnest for a manager to take over from Paul Lambert with a candidate capable of prompting an immediate response from underperforming players the primary focus.

Owner Randy Lerner would like someone for the long haul as he continues to invite bidders for the club, but remaining in the Premier League is essential.
Tim Sherwood tops the bookies list, is available, and has Premier League experience – albeit briefly and at the other end of the table.

He seemed set to take over at Queens Park Rangers following Harry Redknapp’s resignation, but the neat fit alongside friends Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey failed to materialise after the interview stage.
Whether Lerner would turn to a man unfamiliar with a relegation fight is open to debate. Wage demands halted Sherwood’s prospects at West Bromwich Albion last summer but money should not present an issue this time for either party.
Jurgen Klinsmann is well-known to Lerner through his success with the United States football team. Chief executive Tom Fox is also aware of his ability.
However, the former Germany international is believed to be highly settled in the sun-soaked West Coast of America and keen on leading his adopted country to the next World Cup in 2018.
Glenn Hoddle is available and possesses a renowned football brain, although he has not managed since leaving Wolves in 2006. He has been coaching at QPR under Harry Redknapp this season so is attuned to the contemporary game.

Steve McClaren is another name mentioned but he was left bruised by Lerner’s hesitancy in 2011 before Alex McLeish was appointed. It is inconceivable he would want to trade Derby County for Villa now, having re-established his reputation.
Sean Dyche has no doubt won attraction for his success on a shoestring at Burnley, but extricating him from the club, a relegation rival, would prove fraught and there is no sign of willing on his part.
Uwe Rosler could prove a solution, in the short-term at least, given his availability. He was known to the club previously during successful spells at Brentford and Wigan, before that latter job turned sour.
Remi Garde, who interested Newcastle, is also free after leaving Lyon and would likely come with a good recommendation from Arsene Wenger to Fox, the two being former Arsenal colleagues.
Another interesting candidate from abroad would be Thomas Tuchel, who left Mainz last summer against their wishes having led a sustained period of success at the German club.

An organic progression?

it would be about as organic as going to bed a homeless bum and waking up as hugh Hefner

It's funny this has come up on here as last night on BeIn Sports they asked both Andy Cole and Graham Souness if the Villa job was a mangerial graveyard. Why do so many manager's careers seem to go backards after managing at B6?

Neither hesitated in giving the same answer. Souness said that, even with the position of recent years, that the Aston Villa job is still one of the biggest jobs in English football. To effectively take a step-up from Aston Villa as a club would mean a move to one of the top 4 clubs. Souness was actually quite passionate about his point and highlighted Southampton (as one of his ex-clubs) as a case in point saying that, even today, Aston Villa can still tempt a successful Southampton manager, but Southampton would not be able to tempt away a successful Aston Villa manager.

Key word there is successful, it's been a v long time since we've been successful!! Fair play to Souness though
