The problem with Scottish football is the demise of Rangers. There used to be a bit more competition when the likes of Alex Ferguson managed Aberdeen. But really a league without competition is a very dull league

While their current team wouldn't be good enough for the Premier League, as a club they'd do bloody well in the mid-long term.

With the Premier League TV money behind them, and as basically the Premier League team to support as a Scottish football fan, I think they'd comfortably be in the top 6 each season.

It will never happen anyway.

Would Celtic not benefit from joining the Football League and maybe in a few years joining the Premier League?

Would they be allowed to?

Why should they be allowed to? you dont see Dinamo Zagreb trying to join the Italian league or BATE to join Russian league. Celtic have no right to be in the English football pyramid

and it will be even less likely if Nicola Sturgeon has her way. If you are an independent country there is no way they will be allowed to join the Premier League. It would be like Man united playing in La Liga.

Scottish football is terrible, if you supported any other side other than Celtic why would you bother? Even Rangers are pants now.

Newcastle and Sunderland are better off joining Scottish League they would rival Celtic and make it a bit more competitive

It must even be dull for a Celtic fan.

Indeed. In the 80's you had the 'New Firm' of Aberdeen and Dundee United winning things, which made it far more interesting.

...and then all of the money flooded English football making Scottish football completely unattractive. Shame.

thats not really true though, Rangers had bankrolled their way over the New Firm before Sky money came in

Yes, exactly. Rangers and Celtic both had some cracking players up there at points; Brian Laudrup being a particular favourite

No chance of attracting that kind of talent now, really. Players would rather go to low Premier League/Championship clubs instead.

Dembele joined though which was quite a coup for them. They will get big money for him and make Celtic even stronger. Rangers should go for Richards I think he might do well up there. Surprised one of them doesn't go for McCormack. He would smash it up there

Anyone follow a lower league Scottish team?

Cowdenbeath are my team (i liked the name as a kid!) and they survived relegation from the league structure yesterday by beating East Kilbride on penalties at Central Park.

Hoping to get to see a game there next season before the old ground (dubbed the worst in Scotland) is bulldozed.

No sky money now though in scotland.

Celtic will get 3 million for winning the league, Only 2nd/3rd/4th get more than 1.5mil.

The whole of the SPL gets a split of 19 million for sky/bt showing 60 games.

Impossible for anyone to even get close to Celtic when they get 11 million+ for simply getting to the group stages of the champions league.

Wayne Rooney earns more in a month than 90% of the teams in scotland earn in a whole season

During the 80's and probably early 90's, Celtic and particularly Rangers, would have probably been good enough to win honours in England straight away. In the Battle of Britain in 1992 (I think) Scottish champions Rangers beat English champions Leeds over both legs in the European Cup.

The Sky money propelled English teams light years ahead of Scottish ones, so much so, players often leave to join Championship teams in England as they will earn a lot more.

Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Wrexham and Merthyr Tydfil say hello.

I don't actually want Celtic or Rangers anywhere near English football but there's a precedent for allowing it already. If they did join though they should have to do so as any other new member would and that's at the bottom of non-league football so they'd be looking at a good 7 or 8 promotions at least just to get into the football league.

If they're prepared to do that then fine, let them in, at least they'll have earned it then

I think celtic did the same to Leeds 20 years before that and that was the great Leeds under Revie. Its funny that the championship is a bigger league is terms of money and viewing figures plus attendances I guess as well.

You missed Colwyn Bay, too!

All Welsh sides used to play in the "English" football pyramid until the League of Wales was formed which was recent (80s/90s?).  Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Wrexham, Merthyr and Colwyn all refused the option of joining.

There are a few historic oddities like that.  Berwick Rangers (English) play in the Scottish pyramid.  TNS (English) play in the Welsh pyramid.  Gretna (Scottish) used to play in the English pyramid, then changed into the Scottish one.

All very odd!
