  1. I remember my mum once asking why The Police were singing about Sue Lawley.
  2. Or maybe you just haven't met "the one"?
  3. 15 years in London now so commuting is just something I put up with. I think the best commute I've had is an hour and a half each-way. Currently it's nearer two hours each way. I don't mind it so much as I can either get some work done, listen to some music, read a book or have a nap. It helps a lot that my boss is very relaxed. If she didn't see me for a week, she wouldn't bat an eyelid. I can work from home any day I like without telling the boss and so long as I'm in the office by about ten in the morning, that's fine too. Having said that, I do miss the days I worked in Birmingham when my commute was about 8 minutes in the car.
  4. The more you do anything, the lesser its' impact.
  5. Aye, the problem is when it becomes prescriptive. I'm mourning so you should too and you must mourn what I say you should. My point was countering those who tell me what I should mourn and that I shouldn't mourn one bad thing because another bad thing (to which I am less connected) happened also. We should be impacted by all the bad things in the world but I will very naturally be hurt more by the bad things that more closely impact me.
  6. The mundanity of life as a SuperHero. Not the best film I've ever seen but definitely a few good laughs in it:
  7. The best analogy I heard (and, like all analogies, it's flawed to some extent) was that it would be illogical to tell someone they shouldn't be upset at their brother's funeral when they couldn't even be bothered to go to the funeral of their second cousin.
  8. I always liked Boisdale but was surprised to see that there are three of them now.
  9. I'd imagine it's very much part of the recruitment considerations. "Who do we know who has a dodgy past and therefore knows will struggle to find acceptance in mainstream Muslim life? It'd be even better if they didn't really understand the scriptures so we can manipulate them effectively. Oh and I bet the thought of guns and explosives will be a big attraction to them, although I'm sure the virgins in heaven will interest them too".
  10. I remember seeing him play against Ireland years ago. We were on the front row (of the stand, rather than the scrum) and when he walked past, it was unbelievable quite how much of a beast he was. The ground genuinely shook when he ran past us. Not sure anyone in any sport has had quite the impact he had on rugby. Changed the game but still appeared to stay very humble. RIP
  11. Cynthia Payne - 82. Inspiration for the excellent film, Personal Services.
  12. What a difference a bit of time off makes.
  13. Every job I've ever had! I think that might be something to do with being unfairly redundised a couple of times when I was young and very naive. I know I'm good at my job but that hasn't stopped me getting shafted before.
  14. Getting convictions is such an antiquated idea. We just disappear these people nowadays. ;)
  15. I'm sure they are picking up "people of interest" regularly but the way it was described to me was that these were people actively involved in specific plans for specific attacks rather than someone who was training crows or buying lots of peroxide.
  16. I have much of it on DVD. Safe to say it's unlikely to be broadcast any time soon. I don't think Ever Decreasing Circles had quite the level of racism and homophobia that Til Death had.
  17. The trouble is, it's like the IRA used to say. It's all well and good the authorities being lucky 99 times out of 100. They only need to get lucky once.
  18. I have it fairly good authority (which I won't post for obvious reasons) that the number is significantly higher than that. I think the feeling is that the real number would create more panic.
  19. You detonate your suicide vest which blows you to smithereens but your passport remains intact?
  20. I know it's easy to blame refugees for what's happened but in reality the perpetrators are exactly the people these refugees have been running from.
  21. I think most people would agree that the Westboro Baptist church does not represent the views of the millions of Christians in the world.
  22. The best definition I've seen of the differences and the history was Bitter Lake by Adam Curtis. I'm sure it's still available on iplayer.

    Paul McGrath

That's the thing for me. When I see him on form (i.e. sober) I'm always delighted. Having read his book and realising how much crap his brain puts him through,I love seeing him on top of things. Someone I loved so much as a kid, so sad to see he can't get by without a drop or two.
