  1. Thank you for your somewhat condescending comment. Merry Christmas !
  2. I am well aware of the poster who dislikes 'Disco' but the thing is, if you are playing in a band for people to dance to (as I was) that 16's/ 4 to the floor is great. In fact if , as a drummer, you couldn't crack those 16's on the hi hat you were stuffed. No less a person than Bernard (Pretty) Purdie identifies disco as different from Motown, Stax etc. Rap !!! well , there is very little musicianship in that these days (IMO ) but some might rememeber a lady called Millie Jackson who was an early 'rapper' and her stuff was great - if not somewhat explicit ; eg The Phuck You Symphony.:) Have you all looked up Screamin' Jay ?
  3. @chrisp65. Excellent clip from you. Among bass players I've played with they argue who kicked off this technique first; Bootsy or a great bassist (IMO) called Larry Graham. I saw Bootsy at the Odeon; I think he was on with Ray Parker Jnr. I have to say it wsa the loudest bass I have ever heard - but then I've never seen Motorhead
  4. I know what you mean re. James Brown, he was very popular in the 60's; such numbers as "I Go Crazy" Papa's Got a Brand New Bag " etc. But something that he and The Famous Flames promoted was something called "The One" where the first beat of the bar was accentuated. This possibly gave his music a differnt sound. Incidentally, his stage act might have been pinched fron a bloke called Screaming Jay Hawkins who I was fortunate to see at "The Crazy E" which was on the corner of Navigation Street.
  5. Legendary session drummer Jim Gordon died in prison/hospital. Many might know his name 'cos he played with Derek and The Dominos but he did much more than that - including playing with Steely Dan, so he must have been good ! Sadly had severe mental problems which culminated in him killing his own mother. You hear many of his contemporaries praising his ability: Jim Keltner, Jeff Porcaro et al. Apparently had applied for parole several times but always refused. What a tragic life .
  6. You are right but perhaps I am not as prescient as some.
  7. Also played on the brilliant Steely Dan LP "AJA" . Apparently they had to personally persuade him to play the solo on that 'cos "he doesn't do dates". Walter Becker also wondered if Shorter might consider the gig "inappropriate" and then probably found out who else was playing on that number; Steve Gadd etc.
  8. In the 70's there was an excellent publication called International Musician, which was essential reading in the band I played in (bit like Melody Maker). Zappa wrote some ace articles in I.M. , one of which claimed that most musicians would rather have oral sex after a gig than get paid. Hmm. (Don't know if you can still get that publication now in the U.K.)
  9. Interesting ! Have seen The Who, original lineup, twice in B/ham; Jeff Beck about 30 years a go at the Odean in a pick up band with Mo Foster on bass, Tony Banks and the ace Simon Phillips on (TAMA) drums , Wizzard at the old Top Rank in Dale End (got in free 'cos the keyboard player is a mate.) Original Fleetwood Mac (Shake your Money Maker) at same venue but think Peter Green was with them - Jeremy Spencer was. The one I thought you might have mentioned was Cream ! Would liked to have seen to have seen King Crimson (with Michael Giles).
  10. Very sad. I was lucky enough to see EWF at their height in the UK , Wembley Arena 1976 ish. He was a very steady, accomplishe drummer who only used a relatively small kit. We just don't seem to get music of that quality today.
  11. @DeadlyDirkJust read this post. Can you remember which Course you did that "25" on ? P.S. Zipp wheels are ace . I can/could only afford Corima.
  12. Couple in bed one night. Wife turns to husband and says 'What time is it?' Husband says 'Don't know, pass me the trombone'. Husband gives 3 blasts on trombone, and someone in the street yells out , 'Who is playing the trombone at nearly 2.am'.
  13. Great debut by the young Leicestershir leg spinner. Wonder how long before he goes to Lancashire though !!!
  14. Terry Hall gone. What will happen to Lenny The Lion now then ?
  15. I read that Ricky Ponting is ill; great cricketer and sincerely hope he recovers. But .. he is co-author of "The Australian Book of Sportsmanship"; written on ths back os a postage stamp !
  16. That argument was put to me by an Indian (Sikh) who I used to work with, sadly a Wolves fan. I asked him why there weren't more Asian footballers; he rerckoned it was because the (Indian) families wanted their boys to be in the Professions;- Doctors, Lawyers, Acoountants etc. Nothing to do with racism incidentally.
  17. I know most of those bands and have vague connections with a couple. Big Bertha and Bedlam contained Dave Ball who I played with in the 60's(also one Cozy Powell who was somewhat better than me !!) Exception were B/ham's answer to Cream - brilliant band - cult record "The Eagle Flys On Friday" Think Dave Pegg was bassist. Montanas were a really good 'cabaret band' from Wolverhampton. A couple of 'em became cabaret acts when they split ; Ian Sludge Lees being one - died last yeat I think. I backed him a few times - great act IMO. Californians - again from Wolverhampton - Beach Boys type band with great harmonies (what ever happened to harmony). Galliard grew out of a band called The King Bees - B/ham Mod band which featured a Bloke called Carl Palmer ! They had appeared at The Cavern the week before we played there and the Medallion Man DJ there was keen to tell us how good they were and were we that good ?? (answer - NO) Bakerloo - featured Clem Clempson who some might know. This was my era - hence - very old.
  18. Wasn't there an urban rumour that Ron Atkinson knew Ugo's contract was up on a certain day and nipped in and signed him before WBA could re sign him ?
  19. ^^^^ fair enough ! Then what about John Diggins ?
  20. Any of you guitarist types ever heard of 'Chris Larkin' guitars ? He is, or rather was, an Irish guitar maker, died a couple of years ago. A good mate (played in a band that toured the U.S. supporting Black Sabbath) had a deal with him and had a couple of his guitars. Ever heard of him ?
  21. Brian Robinson, first Briton to win a stage in The Tour de France in 1955 passed away today - aged 91. Back then it was an amazing achievment; now it is fairly de rigeur. Think he won in 1955.
  22. Indeed it was ! Lots of great bands played there - perhaps mainly local. but IIRC Spencer Davis played there quite a bit. I'm trying to remember if that was the pub that morph ed into "Henry's Blues House". I would loved to have played there but we probably ween't good enough !!! Probably more late 60's I think.
  23. Great win for Scotland in the T20. Beating West Indies, no mean feat.
