Classic Albums - The Making Of "AJA" ; Steely Dan.

Synth/keboard players MIGHT find this interesting. I was extreeeemly lucky to play with this bloke in a B/ham based band in about 1973. He obviously went on to bigger and better things and now lives in the U.S.

There used to be some really good pies from Stoke on Trent made by " Wriiiiights Piiiies" , they were meat and potato. Please note the Stokie pronunciation - my wife is from there.

I think you'll find "steaming" , along with 'taxing' and 'mugging' started in London with the (mainly) black gangs. Steaming was usually carried out on the Underground. I dealt with quite a few found guilty of this offence and it involved quite a bit of violence, hence they ended up in the YOI where I worked.

Yep , about right. We backed The Kinks at The Belfry in 1970 (I think) - "Lola" was number 1 that week. They didn't play many, if any, of their fast R&B numbers, possibly 'cos they didn't play on the record. Think Jimmy Page played the guitar part and Clem Cattini the drum part - although reckon Mick Avory could have played that easily enough. The Davies brothers didn't speak to us and were rather arrogant but Mick Avory was a really pleasant bloke. Did drop a lot of sticks though !!!

Not an original memeber of the Kinks I think. They brought him in with another bass player when Peter Quaife left.

My favourite wild animal; I have a cabinet dedicated to them; couple of Crown Derby, couple of Moorcroft etc. Always liked "Mr Badger in "wind in the willows". I trust you all know the famous rock musician who is a big badger fan ?

I wonder what the Seletcor(s) who decided NOT to pick Chris Woakes for the Test, on his Home ground, are thinking now. I think he was available - not injured or anything !

I think I might be right in guessing that Anderson will be in the side for the next Test at his home ground - assuming he is fit. Couldn't begrudge a player like that from dropping straight back in but .... if so , who do you think will be dropped ? Faites vos jeux ! Hint - might play for that unfashionable County , Warwickshire !.

OMG - that's rotten. Saw him at Bham Odeon in a 'pick up band' to support Jeff Beck. Others in the band were Tony Banks and the brilliant (IMO) Simon Phillips - on TAMA drums. RIP a great player . NB - some pick up band that !!!

Some people on here may have studied the History of WW2 at school/collge etc. I did the Industrial and Agrarian Revolutions so have no Academic knowledge of that War. However, I recently watched a Documentary where an academic suggested that The Allies should tried harder to negotiate with Hitler to form an Alliance to face the threat from Russia ; who he considered the real threat/enemy. Given that Hitler was mad and totally untrustworthy, could this have worked and would the World be safer now ? N.B. Negotiate NOT appease.

Saw Buddy Rich at The Odeon in New Street; just frightening ! He gave a name check to Carl Palmer, his Mom was in the audience. Believe Buddy gave Mr Palmer drum lessons and was very impressed by his ability. Can see the similarities ; even the 'traditional' way he holds the sticks - as opposed to 'matched grip'. Have to say , he was a tad rude to a couple of his band members. Denis Chambers played with the mighty Steely Dan a couple of times.

I take great exception to that !!!!

Further to blandy's post ; I played in a midweek "office team" - Local Authority. Some how , with about 3 matched to go , we were top of the League and a trophy beckoned. Our next fixture was aginst a (then) Birmingham League side, West Bromwich Dartmouth 3rds. Our opening batsman(Roger) played for Old Hill at weekends and told us the West Brom would bring in players from their better sides. Emphasise , we were just an office team with a couple of decent players (not me !!). Sure enough, Dartmouth brought in a fast bowler who persisted in pitching it short. Our Old Hill player stepped forward to remonstrate with the bowler and ask the umpire for advice and the'keeper ran him out ! With hindsight , he should have known better but just wasn't expecting it at our level. So it seems this sort of thing goes on right down to the lower levels. As an adjunct on cheating , the actions of Trevor Chappell wil ltake some beating !!!

Indeed ! Now then , if Ali is available for the knock-out stages, would you pick him ? Personally I would not; would much rather have Hain back fit. Just an opinion.

Caught sight of Jeetan Patel with the England management. What a player he was for Warks - wish they had him playing now. England showed great forsight (IMO) for recruiting HIM . They could do worse than roll him out to play

Yes , I see what you mean. Doesn't always work though; witness the Aussies winding the Indians up in Australia and see what happened. It was probably the stupidity of it that struck me.

An example of this might be, individuals in the Hollies Stand last week singing to Nathan Lyon; "You're just a Sh*t Moeen Ali". Do these people actually know anything about cricket or just come to drink all day !!
