I might look at the whole spectrum of crime, religion, first language, poverty, overcrowding, single mums etc.. But I wouldn't presume the colour of an area was a signifier of anything. If the area clearly had a strong culture that was not similar to mine, I'd count that as a big influence. For instance, if there were a lot of 4x4's, ponies and a golf club and a conservative club where the masons met, or if there were a lot of niqabs being worn and most signage wasn't in my first or second languages, or if everyone was clearly very very into KFC, and Burger King and Chicken Cottage and Pizza and kebabs. A racist comment or slur was never far away whether it was meant to insult me or not. I prefer multi cultural area's personally. People tend to be a lot more tolerant and understanding of other cultures. whilst we have multi cultural areas (even a country) I still think personally that multi multiculturalism has failed ... tolerance yes , multi culturalism , No Woking near me has a high Indian population .. invariably the Indian kids all hang around together wearing Man U shirts and chatting away amongst themselves in Hindi but as they were born in bred in England and goto school in England , I always think English is probably their first languge and they are just showing off , but really I think it just comes down a community thing .. maybe they don't' feel accepted outside of the Indian community , maybe they have no desire to mix , I honestly couldnt give the answer to that one ..but it is all around me , I saw a wedding party on the Thames the other day , every guest was black , not one white or asian face ...the Poles that work around my area don't seem to socialise outside their community , we still have an Italian kids \ adults who invariably hang around with other Italians ... we have a couple of "Indian" teams in our local football league and not one white face amongst them (of course the team I played for was all white ) I have lots of acquaintances from all manner of different ethnicity and background but i don't really have close friends from any of those backgrounds , not sure who is to "blame " for that , maybe it's just in my childhood \ youth ? my main friendships are people I grew up with and have known for 30 years , you might make new friendsalong the way , but the friendships from childhood seem to be the main ones (in my case at least) My kids school however , is like the United Nations with so many different backgrounds , we quite often have to cater for play dates where someone can't eat pork ( no parent has ever bought up Halal interestingly just the pork issue ) , My daughters best friend is Syrian and my sons best friend is Finnish .. So whilst I grew up only really knowing white people their groups of friends when they are older will almost certainly be more diverse than mine so multiculturalism isn't dead and has a future , I just don't think it has worked that well so far I should add that I grew up in a small village in Surrey , some of you growing up in larger cities may have a totally different experience to me Edited July 22, 2014 by tonyh29 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

villa4europe Posted July 22, 2014 Share Posted July 22, 2014 15m south of brum and id say black people or asians would do well to register 5% of the demographic, there's certainly no community or areas, then i'll work somewhere like blakenhall in wolverhampton and to me thats mind blowing (i was building an indian restaurant at the time) really nice people but absolutely no integration at all i've also worked in caldmore in walsall last year, i never realised how much of a shit hole it was, thats probably the worst place ive ever worked, it was like a return to the middle ages, horrible place with horrible people Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'm not sure what kind of poncey tea you're drinking, but a mug of Yorkshire needs a splash of milk. I'll be referring to this injustice when I finally get out of this shithole.
