The Right to Crash Cars Into People

'Earlier this week, Florida Republicans enacted a law they claimed would prevent riots in the state. Its real purpose, of course, was to discourage protesting and punish demonstrators. One of the bill’s provisions has received a fair amount of national attention, as it seems to give Floridians permission to attack protesters with their cars. The bill doesn’t exactly make it legal to run someone over, but it does shield drivers from civil liability if they injure or kill protesters on Florida roads.

In isolation, it’s hard to understand the purpose of such a curious provision. What problem does it solve? As the Florida American Civil Liberties Union pointed out, very few recent protests in the state involved violence or even vandalism, and police and prosecutors were already well equipped (some would say, more than well equipped) to handle whatever rioting might occur. If demonstrators blocking roads and snarling up traffic were a serious problem in Florida in need of a legislative remedy, surely thoughtful legislators could come up with a more effective or ethical response than making it less personally risky for people to injure or kill those demonstrators with cars. But efficacy and ethics don’t really seem to be guiding the decisions of Republican-run state legislatures lately.

To understand what’s really behind the bill, recall that it comes less than four years after a 20-year-old neo-Nazi named James Alex Fields Jr. deliberately drove a Dodge Challenger into a crowd of people counterprotesting the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Fields injured scores of people and killed a woman named Heather Heyer. The obvious and immediate response to this intentional attack was nearly universal shock and horror. Fields was charged with murder and convicted. But since just before that attack, and even more so after it, Republican elected officials across the country have been trying to make it easier for certain people to run over certain other people.'

Hate to say it, but critical support for Team Bigo on this crucial jurisprudential question. That clearly says 'biotd' or 'biatd', neither of which is 'biatch', but if it was intended to be 'bitch', why is there what is clearly either an a or an o between the i and the t?

Government case a shambles, FFS.

It's a defence distraction. Bigo is charged with 7 separate counts including some that involve carring a dangerous or deadly weapon, namely a Zap Hike and Strike Stun Gun / Walking Stick and stealing federal property, namely the letter he stole from Pelosi's office (and was seen on TV holding outside and spoke about to a reporter) none of which hinge on his spelling of Bitch. He's toast

Oh yeah, I'm sure he's got no chance whatsoever. It just made me laugh that they seem to be getting stuck into orthography.

SC on a potential roll.

1. Tells ex-WWE wrestlers to go do one in a head trauma/CTE lawsuit, that is now dead.

2. Take up a concealed carry case from NY, where 2 individuals are claiming infringement of 2A rights due to being denied permits as they didn't demonstrate they had special needs.

3. Takes up case of a couple of Cali non-profits, who wish to keep their donors anonymous per 1A, currently in breach of current Cali law.

Yeah, they're starting to really get cooking on the benefits of a 6-3 majority now aren't they :(

and Biden throws the kitchen sink, with a massive proposal to start universal education for 3/4 yr olds ahead of the "state of the union". It's got basically no chance of getting through, but this proposal specifically is clearly presented with an eye on the 2022 elections.

It's not so much a discussion thread as a place for Villakram to collect his confirmation biases.

You could just use Evernote or something like that. Pocket? I think there are others.

Ted Cruz sure knows how to pick his battles.

What good could possibly come from getting in a twitter war with a talkshow host? He's just going to embarrass himself some more

Federal Investigators Execute Search Warrant at Rudy Giuliani’s Apartment

Prosecutors obtained the warrant as part of an investigation into whether Mr. Giuliani broke lobbying laws as President Trump’s personal lawyer.

Federal investigators in Manhattan executed a search warrant on Wednesday at the Upper East Side apartment of Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who became President Donald J. Trump’s personal lawyer, stepping up a criminal investigation into Mr. Giuliani’s dealings in Ukraine, three people with knowledge of the matter said.

One of the people said the investigators had seized Mr. Giuliani’s electronic devices.

Executing a search warrant is an extraordinary move for prosecutors to take against a lawyer, let alone a lawyer for a former president, and it marks a major turning point in the long-running investigation into Mr. Giuliani.

What did I do to perturb your most excellent existence now? Do you agree or disagree with something I stated, have some opinion on the current political direction in the US, policy, rumor or otherwise?

That's essentially the definition of a troll post btw. Hope this response helps dull those pangs.

I bet there's underage porn on his phone, the dirty old ****.

The length of time they've been threatening to do this (Pre-election), I'd be shocked if there was anything to be found

Unless of course, Rudy really is that stupid

Most of the time you barely respond to people's posts, so at least this made you hit the reply button.

I don't know, it's just kind of inane the way you go about it. You have the same tone all the time, and it's so one-sided. You're not really here to talk or engage, so I just don't know why you bother, and for me it ruins the thread more than any other on the site. I'm all for differing opinions, but you just post, it seems, everything controversial you pick up on, one thing after another in a big list—again I don't really think you're interested in talking about any of it.
