bickster Posted October 1, 2012 Moderator Share Posted October 1, 2012 Even if they ceded from Spain, how would the French Catalans react? They'll be assumed into a federal europe in the next few decades anyway so giving them their own cultural identity (which is all they'll have left by then) shouldn't be a problem. Awol
Even if they voted for it Madrid wouldn't wear it. As the article states there is no constitutional mechanism for total secession of the Spanish regions and any unilateral declaration would likely be met with force - the army is loyal to Madrid. Even without violence Madrid could also can block any attempt by an "independent" Catalonia to join the EU which leaves them where, exactly? The real issue is the destruction of the Spanish economy, the need for a 100 billion euro bailout for the Spanish banking sector and more broadly a bailout for the entire Spanish economy. That is being fiercely resisted because it effectively hands economic governance of Europe's 4th largest economy to Brussels and Frankfurt, something the Spanish people would rightly not accept. What they need to do (imho) is fully crystallise the loses to bank balance sheets by accurately marking to market the devaluation in property values. This would purge the financial system of bad debt and see most Spanish banks go under with the accompanying loses to investors and shareholders, but if the UK experience since 2007 has any lesson to learn from it is the folly of propping up insolvent banks at the expense of the real economy. This wouldn't be allowed of course because the effects would cascade across all European and then International banking systems, so instead the 'plebs' across the west will continue getting shafted to prop up a failed and insolvent financial system.. ..Aaand breathe... Dr_Pangloss
It's really kicking off in Spain isn't it? A fair amount of people in Galicia want independence too.

Not necessary, Cardiff, Swansea, Newport County, Wrexham, Merthyr, Berwick Rangers, Derry City etc Most importantly FC Andorra play in the Spanish league already, UE Bossòst are a Spanish team that play in the French system and there are plenty more examples all over the globe. Jon
I thought they split up years ago. I did like the ballad of Tom Jones, although that was a duet with Space, and I'm not sure if was just Cerys that was involved in that.
Stevo985 Posted October 1, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted October 1, 2012 I actually think the Catalunya national team would be better than Spain! They already have a team. It's not FIFA recognised obviously, and they don't play very regularly, but they do exist. And all the eligible players who also play for Spain play. I think Cruyff is the manager at the moment and Valdes is the captain (last I heard. Could be wrong) But yeah, I think they have a pretty awesome team iff everyone plays. Troglodyte Posted October 1, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted October 1, 2012 Apparently Barcelona's away kit next year is going to be red and yellow stripes, to resemble the Catalan flag. Can't be worse than this year's (although that one is strangely growing on me, I think... I'm not sure yet).
The_Rev
Barcelona have had the flag of Catalonia on their kit for as long as I can remember, it's usually on the back between the shoulders. It's on their badge too (as is the cross of St George) and their captains armband tends to be in the colours of the flag of Catalona. They trade on being the national team of Catalonia in much the same way as Celtic and Rangers trade on being "more than a club" to their followers too. I'm not sure whether it's from the heart or cyncially cashing in on a charged issue. I hope it's the former.

AVFCforever1991
Its in everyone's best interest if Barca stayed in La Liga. 100% sure barca wouldn't leave anyway. No doubt about it. Interesting to think about it though.
The_Rev
Even if Catalonia did gain independance (which it wont) I cant see why anybody would think Barcelona would be kicked out of La Liga, it's simply not going to happen. I'm not sure why Catalans are fiercely calling for indepenence either. Actually, I am, it's because the Spanish economy is up to it's neck in shit and of course, ceding from Spain will solve all of those issues overnight...
