Summer 2010 Transfer Talk / Unfounded Speculation

I wouldn't mind us signing Theo Walcott. I think he has stalled abit at Arsenal and moving to Villa would be a good move for him. If Gabby continues to improve as our target man it could be very good combination with frightening speed.

Wouldn't mind some of the Man City players already mentioned. I believe that Ireland could replace Milner if he left.

carrick for a decent price?

Is that a random suggestion? I would like it, calm and experienced player.

I know probably 80% would disagree.

Here's a wave from one of the 80%

I want Martin to release the bad players and bring in some better ones. If this comes to fruition I will be glad. If not it still won't make me less of a Villa fan.

Just curious - which ones are the bad players? And who would you have in their place?

A year ago maybe, but Milner is a centre mid now. I can't see a winger with no central experience replacing our key central midfielder. Not that I'd want Bentley here in any scenario anyway.

Bentley can play in the middle, as can Downing according to MON when we signed him, so it's possible. He certainly ticks the boxes for O'Neill, other than in price which is rather steep, especially as it seems like we will have a significantly reduced transfer budget this year.

Not really a fan of Bentley, and think should Milner leave then we need to look at maybe using what we have at the club and trying Downing in the middle, Albrighton on the right and splashing out on a really decent forward.

That doesn't mean Carlton Cole.

I agree 100% with putting Ash back on the left and bringing in Albrighton. I always thought Downing was bought for the centre and only the emergence of Milner made MON rethink his plan. So for me I think IF we sold Milner we could use the money, as you say, to bring in a top striker and still be pretty flush in the centre. I'm warming (slightly) to the notion of getting Ireland in some kind of player+money deal although I'm still hugely unconvinced about his temperament. I think a better deal for us would be swapping Milner for Berbatov + any money that might come our way but I think we might be going into the realms of fantasy there as I think he'd think he's above us.

**** Downing in the middle! People always moan that he never gets into a tackle yet want to put him in...the middle? Bentley would defo be a better shout, and is and was always a better player. Wouldn't mind him at all, good delivery and can score a screamer1

I hadn't considered Walcott but, all things considered, I like the idea of him playing upfront with Gabby!

Is it realistic to think we could buy him (or afford to buy him) from arsenal?

Gabby & Walcott upfront would kind of remind me of some of the striking partnerships you see in European teams (or in the Europa League). Two small-ish players with pace, linking up to pass the ball into the net.

The other plus with Walcott is that he is very effective on the wing.

So if we were to drop to 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 then he'd be a much better option to push out to the wing (instead of Gabby, who is wasted out wide).

I wouldn't entertain any notion of playing Downing in the middle to be honest. Maybe occasionally as one of three in the middle with two wingers and one striker, maybe.

I'd personally go for Kallstrom as he's a good player and free this summer. A bit of a no brainer really.

We do well with Vikings.

If we assume Sidwell, Salifou and maybe Reo Coker are off, plus Delph being out for a long while, we'll need a couple of others in too.

So I'd go for Scott Parker and Stephen Ireland and that would complete our midfield.

Young, Downing, Albrighton, Milner ©, Parker, Kallstrom, Ireland, Petrov. Plenty of strength in depth there and lots of options with Delph to come back in eventually.

Then we obviously need a striker and thats where most of any money we have to spend will go. Ideally, Harewood and Heskey will be off and that will clear the way for a top striker to come in. I dont know who but say somebody in the Darren Bent bracket but from the continent.

Carew, Agbonlahor, Delfouneso, Weimann and new guy.

Finally we need to sort out who is playing right back. If Beye and Young are on their way then we need a specialist in with Cuellar covering the position. Nathan Clyne looks a good prospect and there have been rumours regarding Manolev, who I dont know much about but is supposed to be decent. I wouldn't mind one of Onuoha or Richards who may be on their way out of Citeh too. **** knows. It needs sorting anyway.

In fact, if Shorey is off and with Bouma off we'll need left back cover too. Maybe a player who can cover both full back positions. Ideally, Luke Young stays then.

Goalkeepers are fine.

So with the outgoing players generating a bit of cash and hopefully a big new sponsorship deal, plus prize money and whatever Randy puts in, I think this is all very realistic.

Gabby & Walcott upfront

Confucius say one chicken must have head.

It would be interesting to see though. I've suggested Walcott before. It all depends how Wenger sees him though and if he has a future at Arsenal. If hes not going to pick him that often would he want to move? He'd know he'd be a regular and a big deal here.

And lets face it, he has the attributes MON loves.

Walcott & Gabby upfront would be one of those signings that could work or could flop.

It could be devastating with the pace between them - but only if O'Neill could drill it into them that they have to concentrate on their positioning and movement.

On the other hand - if it flopped then Walcott could drop to the right wing, Ash can stay on the left and Downing could be used for rotation to keep them both fresh (But then we'd be back to square one - needing a new striker).
