Tatzmania theme park pulls plug on spinning swastika ride

The manager of the Tatzmania amusement park apologised for the design of the Eagle Fly carousel, saying that the form was recognisable from the blueprints

A German theme park has shut its latest attraction, a stomach-churning carousel called “Eagle Fly”, after visitors complained that its seat arrangements form two large swastikas once it lifts them into the sky.

The brown metal structure adorned with eagle-shaped seats went into operation at the Tatzmania amusement park in Löffingen, southwestern Germany, this month. A hydraulic arm lifts people up and spins them around.

Within days, a video was posted online displaying two unmistakeable spinning swastikas, silhouetted black against the bright sky, and dominating the surroundings at a height of 23 metres. It went viral on social media, prompting Tatzmania’s manager, Rüdiger Braun, to pull the plug.

Teenage boy goes blind after existing on Pringles, white bread and French fries

Eating a diet of French fries, Pringles and white bread was enough to make one teenage boy lose his sight, according to a case study published in a medical journal.

Scientists from the University of Bristol examined the case of a young patient whose extremely picky eating led to blindness, and have warned of the dangers of a poor diet.
The unidentified patient told doctors he had only eaten fries from the fish and chip shop, Pringles potato chips, white bread, slices of processed ham and sausage since elementary school, and he avoided foods with certain textures. He first visited a doctor at age 14, complaining of tiredness, according to a case report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on Monday.
He wasn't taking any medication, had a normal BMI and height, and showed no visible signs of malnutrition.
Doctors discovered low vitamin B12 levels and anemia, treating the patient with vitamin B12 injections and offering dietary advice.
One year later there were signs of hearing loss and vision symptoms, but doctors did not find the cause.
His vision had worsened to the point of blindness by 17 years of age, and doctors identified vitamin B12 deficiency, low copper and selenium levels, a high zinc level, reduced vitamin D level and bone level density, according to a statement from the University of Bristol.

Japan may have to dump radioactive water into the sea, minister says

Tokyo Electric, or Tepco, has collected more than 1 million tonnes of contaminated water from the cooling pipes used to keep fuel cores from melting since the plant was crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

“The only option will be to drain it into the sea and dilute it,” the minister, Yoshiaki Harada, told a news briefing in Tokyo.

“The whole of the government will discuss this, but I would like to offer my simple opinion.”

The government is awaiting a report from an expert panel before making a final decision on how to dispose of the radioactive water.

A devastating explosion at a South Korean port saw two oil tankers ravaged by an inferno which injured 10 people including one who is fighting for their life.

At around 10.50am local time in Ulsan, a mushroom cloud of fire erupted from the 25,000-tonne Stolt Groenland.

The blaze quickly spread from this Cayman Island-flagged ship to the 9,000-tonne South Korean-flagged Bow Dalian which was docked nearby.

Blast sparks fire at Russian laboratory housing smallpox virus

Facility know as Vector is one of only two sites holding virus, and also houses Ebola samples

A gas explosion has sparked a fire at a Russian laboratory complex stockpiling viruses ranging from smallpox to Ebola, authorities have said.

The State Research Centre of Virology and Biotechnology denied that the fire had exposed the public to the pathogens stored inside, some of the deadliest on Earth.

The blast took place during repairs to a fifth-floor sanitary inspection room at the facility – known as Vector – in Koltsovo, in the Novosibirsk region of Siberia, the centre said on Monday. The site housed secret biological weapons research during the Soviet era and is now one of Russia’s main disease research centres.

Russian authorities insisted that the room where the explosion occurred was not holding any biohazardous substances and that no structural damage was caused. The mayor of Koltsovo said that the laboratory did not contain any disease samples because of ongoing repair work.

The smallpox virus survives in two places on Earth: at Vector and at another high-security laboratory at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Russian authorities last month were slow to release information about an explosion at a military testing site that caused a spike in radiation levels in Arkhangelsk region. The blast occurred when a liquid-fuelled rocket carrying nuclear materials exploded, killing at least five people.

Authorities initially denied the incident had occurred and reportedly did not tell local hospital staff that the victims had been exposed to deadly levels of radiation. Russia has not said what the military specialists were working on, although experts have speculated it may be a nuclear-powered cruise missile mentioned by Vladimir Putin last year.

Monday’s incident was not the first at the Vector lab. In 2004, a researcher died at the complex after accidentally pricking herself with a needle carrying the Ebola virus. Russian media then claimed it was the only death from the virus in Russia’s history. Outbreaks of anthrax and smallpox were caused by Soviet weapons development programmes in the 1970s and subsequently covered up by the government.

Monkeys are strapped into metal harnesses while cats and dogs are left bleeding and dying in undercover footage recorded at 'German laboratory'

  • Animal rights activists claim to have filmed at the laboratory close to Hamburg
  • Monkeys are locked into metal collars and appear to have developed neuroses
  • A beagle can be seen bleeding in its cage after one of the experiments
  • According to experts toxicity testing involves poisoning and can result in death

Monkeys are strapped into metal harnesses, while cats and dogs are left bleeding and dying in footage which animal rights activists claim was filmed at a German toxicology laboratory.

The German animal activist organisation Soko Tierschutz together with Cruelty Free International say the alleged abuse took place at LPT Laboratory of Pharmacology and Toxicology in Mienenbuttel, on the outskirts of Hamburg.

Photos show macaques strapped to metal brackets in rows on the wall, others have their heads in restraints and are shown desperately trying to escape, while a beagle appears to bleed profusely in cramped cells.

An undercover activist got a job at the research facility from December 2018 to March 2019, and says he witnessed testing on beagles, monkeys, cats and rabbits, carried out for companies throughout the world.

Dutch family 'waiting for end of time' found in secret room

Quote

A family who spent nine years on a farm "waiting for the end of time" have been discovered by police in the Netherlands after one of them turned up at a local pub, reports say.

A man of 58 and six young adults aged 18 to 25 were living at a farm in the province of Drenthe.

The family were found after the eldest of the children ordered beer at a bar in the nearby village of Ruinerwold.

He then told staff he needed help, broadcaster RTV Drenthe reported.

"We found six people living in a small space in the house which could be locked but wasn't a basement," police said in a statement late on Tuesday.

The older man has been arrested. According to the family, he is the father of the six children, say police. It was not clear whether they had been there voluntarily, police added. The eldest son was not there at the time, police told the BBC.

Local reports described the man as a handyman called Josef B, who was originally from Austria.

"I've never seen anything like it," local mayor Roger de Groot told reporters. He revealed that some of the family had not been registered locally and also indicated that the 58 year old was not the father.

The public broadcaster said that the family had been living in isolation waiting for the end of time.

Bar owner Chris Westerbeek described how a man had come in, ordered five beers and drunk them.

"Then I had a chat with him and he revealed he had run away and needed help... then we called the police," he said.

He added: "He had long hair, a dirty beard, wore old clothes and looked confused. He said he'd never been to school and hadn't been to the barber for nine years."

Waits nine years for the end of the world, and then thinks "Ah, **** it" and goes down the pub. There's a moral in there, somewhere.

I bet those five pints tasted good.
