Afcon/Asia Cup and Villa's UCL rivals

Recommended Posts

With these 2 tournaments taking place very soon, a few of our rivals' players will be off for several weeks.

Liverpool will lose Salah, Spurs will lose Bissouma, Son and maybe 1 or 2 more and surely there will be other clubs losing key players.

Who else will be missing and how much of an advantage does this give us in the race for CL qualification?

Looks like Arsenal will lose Partey and Liverpool will lose Matip too.

Not sure Newcastle but thats a few players missing for top 6 sides. We wont be losing anyone so thats gotta help.

Man city lose no players, that surprised me.

Don't worry, Pep will still complain about it.

I was watching Egypt with Mo Salah versus Tanzania 🇹🇿 (with SAMATTA!) today. It’s fascinating to watch. A window into how football used to be played in Britain. So many long range shots and 50 yard lobbed passes. And physicality!

Need Egypt to go all the way really. Whilst I can't see us catching Liverpool (as I expect them to be 2nd or 3rd with Man City pissing the league), it may help us stay closer to them with Salah out for 5 weeks.

That said, they won at Arsenal yday so who knows.

Ivory Coast off to a good start. 1-0 after 5 mins or so against Guinea-Bissau. Both nations with really nice vibrant kits. Not quite Nigeria good but still nice.

Caught some of the Nigeria vs Equitorial Guinea match and the standard was so bad.

How Napoli can demand a stupid amount for Osimen is beyond me - he looked terrible.

Having never watched a second of any AFCON tournament ever, I read so many posts like this. The standard os always reported to be terrible. And yet the amount of Premier League players from Africa over the years is staggeringly high.

What is the reason clubs go out of their way to spend millions on players from a continent with such a poor standard instead of bringing through local talent of their own?

For every Drogba and Salah there are scores of bog standard/piss poor players (mostly called Cisse or Traore it seems).

Never come close to winning a WC either. Yet come the summer, there will be tons of African players on their way to the PL or Championship.

Then AFCON comes around and people pretty unanimously say it's terrible.
