For me it's because he's from a time when interviewers knew when to shut their mouth and let the star talk. But the interviewer was intelligent enough to ask the right questions, give the right responses to keep the interview going but keep the star engaged and interesting. A bit like the best sports commentators. Know what to say, when to say it, and also when not to. Wogan was also excellent at that. We don't have many, if any, of those now. He was a bit unreconstructed, but his interview with George Michael after he had been destroyed in the media and forced to come out publicly sticks in my mind.
