We have Ramsey, Luiz, McGinn, Sanson & Nakamba who had a combined total of zero games in the Premier League prior to joining Villa. Add to that you wouldn't call an of them big on field leaders. Our midfield has been a problem for three seasons.

But, get in a player who has captained his country and Liverpool many times. Has won the Premier League, Champions League. That his previous manager Klopp says "It is not only on the pitch we miss him but we really, really miss him in the dressing room as well.

Who would cost us less per season than Ings costs us. But No no no, we don't want him. He'll be on high wages etc. Go look at all the people who said that about Coutinho in the Coutinho thread. It really boggles the mind.

I wouldn't buy Coutinho for 33m AND pay him 400k a week either.

Fernandinho leaving City 🤔

But I see the likes of Newcastle all over these types.

With the recruitment specialists they've signed up, they'll be signing nothing of the sorts. It'll be almost exclusively good to excellent players, able to elevate them or bring about a decent return.

But haven’t we signed recruitment specialists like that aswell?! I’m sure we did, maybe I imagined it but part of the reason I keep being so underwhelmed with our rumoured targets is because even I have heard of them all whereas I’d hoped we’d be swooping in for the next hidden/lesser known gem.

Here’s a mad question. If somebody offered £65m for Martinez would you sell?

No. We should snap anyones hands off at that price BUT he is a symbol of the club to me. I have a connection with him like i do with only a few of our players. A genuinely lovely shithouse !!

I think the likes of West Ham would be more attractive than us currently, especially if they lose Rice, Wolves if they lose Neves or Newcastle as they'll pay more.  He won't be choosing us if he has those options, especially if we finish below Brighton, which is a possibility.

I would guess Villa pay more than the others, except for maybe Newcastle. While league positions are important for giving an impression, they also change. The big 6 usually finish high and newly promoted clubs low, but the others bounce up and down. West Ham could easily finish 14th next season and Everton 8th.

I wouldn’t rule out Bissouma signing for Villa. He doesn’t stand out enough to be irresistible for the top clubs.

We could definitely use the money, not least for FFP reasons. I’d sell for more than 50.

We’re pretty ok for FFP at the moment I believe - also remember that a signing costs their fee divided by contract length for FFP, while sales all go against it in one go. Grealish sold for 100m was +100m onto the books immediately, the signings we made were 90m/4 (22.5m/yr), so in terms of that transfer we were up 77.5m last year (more to it than that especially when wages etc come into it, but you get the idea)

Yeah football accounting is interesting. Next year though the JG income is 0 while last summer’s signings still cost another 22.5, to which we add new signings and so on. I read FFP could be a reason why Villa prefer to send players on loan, since amortization means selling a player one or two seasons later can turn a value decrease into a ”profit”.

Yep. 65mil is 65mil tbh. Also he hasn't been nearly as good as he was last season either. Current Martinez is still good, but he's not 65m good.

Yeah but where are we getting a keeper as good, for that?

65m for a keeper.

Most expensive keepers ever (and some others):

Kepa - 75m

Allison - 65m

Courtois - 35m

Ederson - 35m

Buffon - 33m

Mendy - 22m

main thing is, ofc i wouldnt want to lose Martinez ideally, but if you could get 65m for him, although you may or may not be able to replace him with a better keeper, you should at least be able to buy a very good one for 20-30m, and have 35m in the bank to spend elsewhere.

Im not advocating selling Martinez, but 65m?, thats a lot lot...of money for a keeper.
