I’m struggling to understand how it got so bad in 2021 for Smith after such a great start. It can’t all be down to Grealish surely?  Are our players just shit but over achieved for 2-3 months?

I think managers and teams needs to constantly evolve and adapt. This didn't happen are Villa with Smith, we were the same all the time and opposing teams learned how to handle it. Very similar to Blades under Wilder, he was lauded for playing overlapping fullbacks and did very well in his 1st season up. But he wasn't able to move on from there and he was found out. I think we are similar and we also had Jack to skew our overall performances. I think the fact that we were dire at coming from behind supports this as it showed Dean wasn't able to adapt and turn things around.

Do you think they could convince Arsene Wenger to come back into management. 🤣

Anyone would come out of retirement for the right price, shouldn't imagine Arsenal fans would be happy with that one considering they were calling for his name when they had there bad run.

Me too. I think reading the negative posts about him on here are pushing me towards him as they are mainly based on emotion rather than reality. If we remove the anti Liverpool and pro Dean Smith rhetoric there are very few negatives and many positives

Thats rubbish.  Emotional 😂There are loads of football negatives if you have read the past 100 pages.

That's not true.  He failed to win the FA Cup on his birthday as the perfect end to his playing career.

Pin on Aston Villa

That's why he's coming here - revenge. Sabotage us he will ;)

I was in the Liverpool end for that semi (long story). Saw up close for the first time the "legendary" Scouse support. What an absolute myth. Started clearing out on 80 mins.

I don't get the Gerrard hate, much as I'd prefer Ten Hag.

I want managers with it all before them and everything to prove and achieve. I also want a coaching set up not afraid to launch any of our players if they feel they're not the right calibre to progress us. We may have been beholden to a couple at least recently that made for an unhealthy comfort in the squad. And maybe some resentment, who knows.

Hours*

I have been watching a few of his interviews in preparation. He talks a good game that's for sure.

Well if nothing else at least Press conferences might be interesting. Love Dean but boy were they boring. Lovely guy though.

Gerrard comming here would be a big mistake IMHO for the following reasons.

1 - Leading Rangers to the title is a lot different to keeping a team in the PL ( dont even mention the top 6 places )

2 - What if he takes over and gets us into europe and Klop leaves and Liverpool need a new manager,we are back to square 1

Gerrard might be great but he is certainly not as engaging or articulate as Deano.

If Gerrard fails with us he will most likely have to spend his weekends with Souness, Keane, Neville and Carragher. Now if that isn’t enough motivation to succeed I don’t know what is.

If it’s Gerrard I predict that in 2-3 months time everyone of you will love him.

Great I really hope that’s the case, I really want to be successful and everything to be happy, great football and all that and I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong if that happens.  I think there is more chance it won’t work or at best a backwards step and end not in a good way.

Pretty big negatives don’t you think?

If you are going to appoint potential then the manager will by nature be inexperienced. If we do get Gerrard it will be for the potential of him succeeding with Villa. other clubs have employed managers from outside the big top flight leagues and have been successful. Just because he hasn't done it in the PL doesn't mean he can't and his record with Rangers is excellent

Amusingly, the BBC comments section on the Gerrard links are unanimous in the verdict that there isn't a hope in hell we can get Gerrard as he's too good for us.

Any premier league club would be a step for him. The financial gap between english and scottish football is huge.

I trust the board with whoever they pick.

Purslow has credit in the bank from appointing Smith. But I am slightly worried that it appears to be him making this appointment and not Lange. It's always been my understanding that the DoF appoints the coaching staff to complement the current playing staff? That's Lange's specialism not Purslow's. If Purslow has stepped in and told him he's hiring Gerrard then that's not a good reflection on the hierarchy we've put in place. It all just smacks of Tom Fox being mates with Tim Sherwood all over again.
