What is Trump doing for these areas that are voting for him, does anyone know? He must be doing some positive stuff that we just don’t see to be getting the slice of the population he’s getting.

He’s promising disruption of the stuff they don’t like and endorsement of the stuff they do like.

Their jobs went to China... **** China we’ll build stuff here again.

Their jobs went to immigrants....**** immigrants we’ll make jobs building walls.

You like guns? I like guns!!

You hate socialism? I hate Biden too!!

Politics nowadays is based on politicians repeating the good things they claim to have done till it becomes a fact in the minds of the voters. A lack of decent media to counter that means it goes unchallenged.

Is it really built on these kind of promises and statements? Did he not actually DO anything over the last 4 years to earn a vote for a second term?

@chrisp65 has said it better than I could but Trump garners the support from the people who feel forgotten about. If you worked in a button factory in Wyoming that was shut down because it was cheaper to import from China, you might think the Democrats in LA, NYC and DC couldn't give a shit about you. Trump comes along and promises to bring work back to the States and re-open factories. Lots of votes gained.

This was detailed on the Whitehouse website as achievements of Trump (pre-Covid naturally)

Quote

Almost 4 million jobs created since election.
More Americans are now employed than ever recorded before in our history.
We have created more than 400,000 manufacturing jobs since my election.
Manufacturing jobs growing at the fastest rate in more than THREE DECADES.
Economic growth last quarter hit 4.2 percent.
New unemployment claims recently hit a 49-year low.
Median household income has hit highest level ever recorded.
African-American unemployment has recently achieved the lowest rate ever recorded.
Hispanic-American unemployment is at the lowest rate ever recorded.
Asian-American unemployment recently achieved the lowest rate ever recorded.
Women’s unemployment recently reached the lowest rate in 65 years.
Youth unemployment has recently hit the lowest rate in nearly half a century.
Lowest unemployment rate ever recorded for Americans without a high school diploma.
Under my Administration, veterans’ unemployment recently reached its lowest rate in nearly 20 years.
Almost 3.9 million Americans have been lifted off food stamps since the election.
The Pledge to America’s Workers has resulted in employers committing to train more than 4 million Americans. We are committed to VOCATIONAL education.
95 percent of U.S. manufacturers are optimistic about the future—the highest ever.
Retail sales surged last month, up another 6 percent over last year.
Signed the biggest package of tax cuts and reforms in history. After tax cuts, over $300 billion poured back in to the U.S. in the first quarter alone.
As a result of our tax bill, small businesses will have the lowest top marginal tax rate in more than 80 years.

I genuinely think if the election was 12 months ago, Trump would have easily won a second term. His actions (or lack of) in 2020 have ended Trump.

‘Before covid’ unemployment was lower under Trump than Obama, poverty was lower under Trump than Obama, the stock exchange was higher than under Obama.

If you live in a trailer and have a job now that you didn’t have, and less debt, then Trumps’ attitude towards trans rights might not sway your vote.

Thank you. As @Xela also mentioned he seems to have genuinely generated a lot of jobs which may underpin a lot of votes, especially the additional ones.

It’s fascinating, ‘populism’ is awful. populist politicians are almost always awful people.

Why is it difficult to get a politician that isn’t a shitshow of a moral toilet, but wants to build jobs and homes and look after the great unwashed?

It feels from the outside, like such an easy job to be a ‘good populist’.

If you voted for me, I’d get the **** trains running on time.

True, I know many of us enjoyed CNN this past week but I can see why anyone remotely Republican would dislike it and thus turn to Fox News which is whole different level when it comes to media arse-gravy.  If you only use that as your main news source along with Facebook and other social media then it's no wonder that people get so entrenched in their views over there and Trump becomes a hero, despite being possibly the lowest form of scum going.

On the economy I think Trump got lucky to some extent.  The world crashed into one of the worst recessions of all time in 2008 and took about 8 years to really start recover.  From around 2016 coincidentally the whole world started to get back on track, most major economies were growing again.

Sure some of his policies may have helped but I still think his timing was fortunate.

Of course then he was unlucky because Covid then trashed the economy. Things might also be rosy under Biden if the post Covid recovery is V shaped.

Conversely the recession hit just as Obama took over and was dragging on for most of his term. None of which was his fault but he had to deal with.  In fact there is a strong argument that it was the Bush Republican administration which caused the recession in the first place.

But did Trump actually do anything? We can say he did not screw up the economy ...  Here is a review I wrote last year, based on the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and other sources.

What I can't get over is the massive support he receives from the ultra religious types in America.

Surely if the Bible teaches anything its to love thy neighbour and other such nicities.  Trump should be completely at odds with Godly people which shows their utter hypocrisy.

Judges and getting Roe v Wade overturned (allowing abortion at the Federal level.) They justify his abhorrent behavior by saying God uses bad people to do good things. That sky fairy is amazing. So is Double-Think.

He allows them to say the racist bigoted ignorant things they've always thought, but now they can shout about it and don't have to feel ashamed.

That is quite simply the mass appeal that he has.

Sure, you can dig down deeper into the Q fanatics and the Christian wackos. I think being stuck at home for the last 8 months has allowed some to go down internet rabbit holes deep into conspiracy theory. That has been proven by the explosion of Q followers. But essentially stupid people shouting guns, beer and **** the brown people always knew deep down they were kinda stupid. They've become emboldened - a mob mentality - a cult.

Has he really? I'm yet to see an actual report that ties a policy made by the administration directly to the creation of jobs for US workers. However I'm happy to be proved wrong.

He has ridden the coat tails of Obama's economic recovery for 4 years. The economy was flying then he juiced it even more with a massive tax cut for the rich (taxes for middle class people actually went up.) It was completely unnecessary at the time but it was the only piece of major legislation he's managed to pass and it took Pence to break the tie. It was also Ryan's wet dream the absolute weapon that he is.

His tax cut made the market even more unstable IMO with massive daily swings.

Even in London?

Day 1 of my benign dictatorship, sort out London’s public transport.

The bus for Haverfordwest turns up every Tuesday, rain or shine, so we spend spend spend on getting London sorted out.
