Spurs don't even need a new CM. Bentancur will be back in October/November and they need to get much better form out of Bissouma aswell. Skipp and Sarr as cover players so that's more than enough playing just once a week regardless of what happens to Hojberg.

Only concern is if we gave him a buyout clause in his contract when he renewed, after all he held all the cards as he could have left this summer and it was pretty bleak under Gerrard at the time

Otherwise there’d be no way we’d sell him, he’s a class player and fits Emery’s system perfectly. He seems happy here too so doubt he’d force a move.

I had a similar thought myself. It's certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that there's a fairly low release clause in his new contract. Even then though he can do a lot better than Spurs.

The position the club were in when he signed a new deal I'd be surprised if there wasn't a release clause. I'd imagine like Grealish, it would be for Champions League clubs only. If he has is as good next season as he has been under Emery, there will be a lot of interest next summer.

He'd still have to want to leave if an offer came in that met any release / buyout clause.  Why would he want to go to Spurs at the moment?  Not in Europe.  About to lose the player who has given them the only means of competing with / challenging the rest of the Sly 6.  Whereas he seems really settled at Villa, is thriving under a great manager and is running our midfield.  And probably going to be able to thrive even more when we add a couple of high profile attacking players.

If he is as good next season - I suspect that Monchi will be inviting him into his office to discuss a nice shiney new contract.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a clause in his new contract, he would have had all the negotiating power when the club offered a new deal.  But as some have said, it's probably for CL clubs to activate the clause, if there is one. So, he won't be going to Spurs anytime soon.

I wonder how that works if we are a CL club???  Anyway, if we do qualify for the CL next season then I suspect that means that Dougie will have had an amazing season.  He'll need plenty of reassurances about being the midfield Pirlo for any club that are interested in signing him.

Also he seems happy outside of Villa with the band of Amigos who all seem to socialise frequently -Dougie  particularly is often seen with Coutinho's family on Instagram etc

If Doug had a release clause and Spurs triggered it, I don't think he'd go.

There are a group of clubs ahead of us, they're also ahead of Spurs - that move doesn't get him into the title race - it's unlikely it gets him into the Champions League over the course of the next three or four years - it doesn't get him anything he hasn't got here - I don't see why he'd want to go.
