This is what they have collectively as parties, gone away and claimed to have listened to what people want and they come up with these. This is effectivley their big homework project for the last 2 or 3 years. They even worked in little groups of like minded ****-wits and this is what they come up with, poor, very poor IMO, they should know their presentation inside out. If I was going on the TV to answer questions about something i had written at work I would stay up all night and learn it and understand it or one could look a right fool ? Do they even add up, do they even care if they don't, they should all be a little bit ashamed that questions like this can be leveled at something they have had printed 1000''s of time (In colour) the words removed. There was a time (Maybe I am dreaming this) but a manifesto used to contain ideas to help everyone even a little bit or am I wrong in that "It was better years ago observation ?" But they don't even have to revise the subject they've chosen to speak on the next day. John McDonnell started his R4 interview a week ago by putting his notebook on the table. 'You've got a notebook with you' says John Humphrys. 'Yes' says JM, 'it's got the important headline numbers and facts in it, rather than me try and memorise every detail of everything'. **** political genius.

I've read the transcript of the passage in question and heard an edited version. What is embarrassing in my view is the interviewer trying to score points by finding some figure that Corbyn can't immediately recall. The figure in any case will be a rough estimate, dependent on takeup, spare capacity vs new facilities and so on. And yet there is a pretence that there is a true figure, which is really important, and if someone can't immediately recall it, that demonstrates that the economic plans they propose are not viable. Beneath that, lies a desert of economic illiteracy by the interviewers in question (not just this one, by any means - the Today team are prime exponents of this arrogant illiteracy, apart from the new NZ guy they sometimes allow on but don't let do the big interviews because of the egos of Humphrys and Robertson). It substitutes game-playing for discussion of strategy, party tricks for analysis, froth for substance. It is a significant part of the dumbing-down of our political culture. If you grade politicians on their ability to remember exact figures (especially without understanding the limitations on the accuracy of the figures to begin with), and give them a free pass on vague assertions that they will somehow get a "good deal" from negotiations without being able to even begin explaining how, or what other parties to the negotiation need, or why a compromise is achievable, then we slowly train them to play to the petty soundbite and neglect issues of substance. It impoverishes our political culture, and does us all a disservice. We should call out these journos who bask in the attention they get for a day for their shallow party trick, and require them to do some real journalism, starting with developing an elementary understanding of what they are trying to cover. And ask them to tackle harder subjects, like challenging people on selling WMDs to the most vicious and murderous regimes on earth.
chrisp65
Did the Maybot have some weird 'stirrings' today? Asking people to imagine Corbyn alone and naked? I think we briefly saw a glimpse of her cold dark psyche today. Not a people person. Likes the idea of being a bloody awkward woman. Jobs for boys and jobs for girls. Meeting with a 'pastor' that carries out exorcisms to cure people of gay. Now she thinks of Corbyn left naked and alone. Bit weird really. If a male political leader had suggested we all think of her naked and alone...

Good point, plays on the man's physic IMO. She would not say it if Corbyn was 6 foot 3 and a bodybuilder so that's her level of attack I think. Cringeworthy for Emma Barnett yes. She really embarrassed herself. Corbyn shouldn't have to anticipate a trap when just giving an interview to a radio show. Previously it would be a discussion where if the interviewer didn't already know the figures they would allow the guest to check. Everyone now wants to get their name out by catching out a Labour MP. Corbyn did **** all wrong. He had the information on his iPad if he needed to check which he did. She then made it into a problem instead of a non event which it should have been. I absolutely guarantee that if it were May I'd be saying the same thing.

colhint
what, he was trapped? did he not expect that question? It would be like Alex Ferguson being interviewed after Palace 1 utd 1 in 1995 Well Alex that was tough, 1 all not a bad result what about the Kung fu kick. well bugger me I didn't think you were going to ask me about that. But in the exceptionally unlikely event it did they'd have to pull the keys to No. 10 from her cold dead hands. She'd try to purge the party before giving in. Her whole persona is dictatorial, do as I say... and those types of people rarely walk from power.
