I think, at this point of the season, you are overthinking this. Agrees 100%, but it's fun.  There's still a long way to go before looking at specific permutations and everyone (possibly bar Wolves) will be shifting around a fair bit.  2-3 wins or 2-3 losses and it all changes for any of the teams in the mix.Yes, but if the next 2-3 games are wins for Derby/cardiff/bristolC and the 2-3 losses are ours we can forget 2th. Oposite the others are still in the race.

Some guy at SKY's take on the promotion race:

Quote

Aston Villa

Villa are in the play-offs but you'd still argue they've underperformed this season. In terms of quality and experience they've got one of the best squads the Championship has ever seen, but they still haven't really threatened the top two yet.

John Terry has been a big loss in defence and they've missed Jonathan Kodjia for large chunks of the campaign, but the win against Bristol City felt like the first time they've really clicked this season and they should kick on from here. They're battling hefty expectation but they should still be one of the sides who really press Derby.

Where can they strengthen?

This should be a quiet window for Steve Bruce. They've had a huge turnover of players since their relegation and they could do with more time for everyone to gel. There's no reason why their current squad isn't enough to win promotion.

The article goes through all of the other contenders as well.

That article says everything that the Bruce lovers have been justifying for the last god knows how long!

We should already be sitting in 2nd and comfortably at that!

steve Bruce cannot strengthen in this window, because he has a wonderful squad as it is....it can't be bettered.

He just needs to get his act together.

He can with a couple of astute additions which he seems to be working on and he has confirmed as much.

Bizarrely his appointment of Steve Agnew, 4 points from the last 2 games, combined with looking at a couple of good loans and shipping out is going quite okay so far.

A result today can only result in a more feel good factor continuing as it appears to be so far.  (Totally ignoring the FA Cup result).

I think Cardiff will likely beat Sunderland putting them on 50, and I think Derby will likely beat Blues even though they’re at the Sty.

The interesting game is Bristol, they’re playing Norwich who aren’t too bad, and Bristol’s confidence could’ve been knocked by our thrashing, and now they’ve lost four in a row in all competitions. So if they continue to slip that would be brilliant news.

The Sheff game from last night is already good news as they dropped two points at home to a side not challenging 2nd.

Leeds are away to Ipswich so a Leeds loss would be great, but they aren’t a bad side despite taking their foot off the gas a little. They’ll be hot in our tails, and would go ahead of us with a win today if we lose.

Come on Villa!!

Norwich sold one of their better players comfortable Bristol win

cardiff and derby to win. I think we will probably lose now as it's karankas first game at sky.

if we can win gives us a bit of a gap from Sheffield united. Do t let us down (again) villa
