Transfer Speculation January 2016

Was at the game Saturday and one thing is really apparent - we are a quiet team! If we are to make just one signing this window (God hope there's more by the way) but we need a talker/voice in the middle of the park. The type of player that talks to players and the ref at times, can put his fist up to some to get them going and put an arm round others that need encouragement.  You can see that the current players have slowly regressed over six months.  Gana is mute I'm sure!  Now, I really don't know who but we need someone to lead us for rest of season and the next (ie a Joey Barton, a Kevin Nolan type player). It may also make the opposition think that we are not pushovers as I'm sure most teams do at present.

I don't know if Nolan's legs have gone, or if he's just taking some time out of the game. But he would be EXACTLY the kind of player we should be signing.

Perhaps they're waiting to how we do in the next two games before deciding which type of players to go for. If we get a couple of wins and close the gap then we might see some ambitious signings/loans.

Interesting point. Players might be more willing to come at that stage, but it may be too late to make a difference if we don't get results.

I can't imagine Garde would have signed up for this if he was told there was no money for transfers available. To be honest I'm beginning to wonder what he was told to make him think this was a wise career move.

11 days into January and no movement to me suggests that we're dragging our feet, as per usual.

I think if he was to be given any significant sums of money to spend he had to keep us in touch. The gap was 4 points to safety when he came in and I wouldn't be surprised if part of the discussions when he joined went along the lines of you keep us with in a couple of wins of safety and there will be x amount to spend. The failure to do that has clearly changed the landscape and I'd be very surprised if we spend significant sums now and any spending will be in bringing in players that can compete in the Championship.

Sometimes you have to look at signing a player with a bit of 'character' as well as      ability. We simply don't have that character.  Nolan may have been a good or some may say bad example, but I think we need that type. I just can't think of a younger one!

We should try and get Shelvey IMO. Unpopular on here perhaps. however he is obtainable and he would certainly improve the first team.

his workrate will fit him right it ;)

I think I'd need to watch more Championship football to know for sure what is down there but I like Liam Bridcutt. Another one might be Jon Walters if he's still struggling for regular football at the end of the season.

Do you honestly think that? I don't see it.

writing is on the wall. Selling high earners.. bringing in a few loan signings.. to be honest.. i dont blame Lerner for backing Garde right now... no matter who we sign we are doomed.. teams around us have strengthened and we are already way behind them. I blame him for everything else mind.

Byram & Mowatt from Leeds Henry & Bradshaw from Walsall.  Kramaric (loan) or some other striker on loan. Plus a frenchie. Sorted ???

Signing a bloke who struggles for games and goals at Leicester

**** me that's how far we've fallen

Yes to Byram though, I'd be disappointed if we're not trying

Teams who get out of the Championship and stay in the Premiership tend to play good football. If we go down we don't need to sign a bunch of blood and thunder players and play dinosaur football.

It's just a guess, but if we do get a couple of wins then I'd like to think they'd go for it. I happen to think they should be doing what they can now and not waiting.

we should be aiming for young and hungry players (and I dont mean the Lambert approach of young and cheap) ambitious players that have a point to prove and no little talent

also need sign at least 2 hard nosed veterans as an influence on the squad. as I said maybe a player like Parker who will gain respect from others

Well if you look at the teams doing well this season likes of Hull and Burnley kept most of their squad and added a striker or two e.g. Andre Gray.

Boro have a very good squad, Downing is still a good player at prem level, they have Nugent plus existing good players like Leadbitter, Adomah etc.

Same with Derby, already a strong squad for the level and added Bent, Weimann, Butterfield and Bradley Johnson.

To me try and keep Okore, Ayew, Adama, Grealish (if he can be bothered), sign a decent striker as I doubt Gestede will be feeling as good about life as he was at Blackburn after this season and get a solid defensive unit going e.g. new keeper, someone to partner Okore.

If we just naively go in with mostly the same group of players who have been so used to losing then we will be found out particularly as to me this is a very lightweight group who hide when the going gets tough in matches.

It was a very good point made there's hardly anyone vocal in our team and no leaders. It's a problem we've had since the MON years when the team was full of them so surely we can find 1-2 players capable of this a division lower.

I don't get the 'we need championship players if we are going down'? Surely championship players are in the championship because that's their standard, to get out we need decent (premier league or equivalent) players. Same about the managers; good football and good coaching/management will prevail, not getting down and wrestling in the mud?

Some of them sure.

However targeting younger players who are doing well with their clubs should be the remit. Cresswell going to West Ham and doing so well, he has clearly shown he is better than the championship for example.

What we need to do is get these players i.e Byram who has potential to make the step up but can also immediately do very well for us in the championship.

Forget what we did before with targeting younger players, they weren't even doing that well with their clubs at the time.
