The whole venue is now a restaurant? I know the back bit was basically for food but there’s the front bar area and the roof terrace both of which seemed like they were more drinking centric areas.

I did prefer how it used to be. It’s a bit too clean and clinical now. On a pub crawl it was a must visit, handily between the Rose Villa and the Clifden. It’s not been an essential stop for a while now.

Been a few years since i've been to the Church, but always used to like it. Like @Mark Albrighton says, its always done food... specialised in creole/cajun food I think a few years back, and there was the room at the back you could hire. Roof terrace was a good size. Always preferred it to the Lord Clifden, which I never enjoyed as it was always ridiculously busy every time I went. The sort of busy that makes it unenjoyable.

Not sure too be honest, just saw it posted online. Last few times I’ve been (probably last season) the back room had a pool table and TVs and seemed just to do cobs for food, it always had the Villa on a fire stick. I’d imagine the front at least is still a pub as they can’t really get tables there.

Taking my old man for a tour of VP for his 70th next week. Few beers and food in The city centre after. Been a while since I lived in Birmingham - where do people recommend as a good couple of boozers?

If he likes real ales then The Wellington on Bennetts Hill is the zenith.

Purecraft Bar on Waterloo Street is a favourite of mine as well.

Another city centre pub closing. I'll admit, it has been years since I went in there as its the 'wrong' end of town for me

A historic Victorian pub on Corporation Street is facing last orders at the end of October after 134 years in business.

The Crown, at the corner of Newton Street close to Birmingham Crown Court at the Queen Elizabeth Law Courts, was built in 1888

The Post Office Vaults is a traditional little pub.

If you were further out from the centre, the Jewellers Arms in the Jewellery Quarter again is an old fashioned pub.

Although in fairness, @Villa87 I’m kinda making the assumption that being 70, your dad might want a more traditional pub.

There’s plenty of choices if you were after something a bit more of a modern, bar type thing. The Rose Villa in the JQ has a modern style in a more old school setting. Likewise The Old Crown over in Digbeth. Maybe something like the Florence is a nice mixture of both.

Otherwise those and the ones already mentioned are probably your best bet.

Oh damn. I've used that a few time pre match. Big, shows matches, rarely a big queue at the bar and an easy taxi ride to Villa Park.

Mentioned on another thread, but another Crown pub in Brum could be saved, after losing the other Crown.

A city centre pub where Ozzy Osbourne and the original members of Black Sabbath played their first gig is to be restored after lying derelict for years.

The Crown opposite Birmingham New Street station is to be the site of a new live music venue and digital centre, a project led by arts organisation BOM (Birmingham Open Media).

A prominent location in the musical map of the UK, The Crown has hosted the likes of Status Quo, Led Zeppelin, and UB40 over its rich history. The pub provided a launch pad for the inception of heavy metal and first hosted Ozzy Osbourne and co back in 1968.

I've heard The Crown by the law courts could be turning into a wine bar. Urgghh.

Been asked to come up with somewhere for a Christmas meal and drinks in Birmingham. Any suggestions, city centre, veggie/halal/no beef options. I would say the city centre element is fairly strict, the vine isn't suitable, worth it, obviously but these are people from across the west mids and Staffordshire. A trip out won't extend beyond the city centre

Yeah, like you'd be allowed to drink in that part of town. Mate.

If they can walk a little bit, maybe The Shakespeare on Summer Row (obviously not the other Shakespeare right by new street).

Equally the Old Contemptibles might be a good shout.

A bit closer to the station The Botanist or The Florence.

As a side note, if any of these pubs want to thank me for these frequent recommendations by offering me complimentary drinks, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
