Micah Richards: England defender in action for Fiorentina

Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of Micah Richards, according to widespread reports.

The former Manchester City right-back, who spent last season on loan with Serie A club Fiorentina, is a free agent after leaving the Etihad Stadium.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs, including Sunderland, Liverpool and Newcastle, but Villa look set to win the race for his signature.

Richards, who has made 13 appearances for England, won two league titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup with City but last featured for Manuel Pellegrini's side in a home defeat to Wigan in March 2014.

Losing FA Cup finalists Villa, now managed by Tim Sherwood, are keen to bolster their defensive options after conceding 57 league goals last season - a campaign which saw them escape relegation by only three points.

Fantastic signing. Think some people in the speculation thread are forgetting the position we've been in the last 4 seasons and should be very pleased we are attracting players of this caliber and potential. Still only 26 too, very pleased with this.

Think your spot on mate. We are not challenging for Europe, we are currently the worst team in the league if you look at the standings (outside relegation) this is a real coup on a free

All done according to the Mirror. Apparently he's turned down 90k p/w from Sunderland to take £65k p/w from us to work with Tim

Micah Richards has agreed to join Aston Villa after turning down a lucrative deal from Sunderland.

Sunderland had offered the right back around £90,000-a-week, but he chose Villa - and a deal understood to be around £65,000-a-week - after a personal intervention from Tim Sherwood.

The sought-after 26-year-old, had also been pursued by West Ham following his release from Manchester City.

The Villa boss is understood to have convinced Richards that he would play a key role in his new-look side and that he would be helped in his bid to break back into the England picture.

Richards has been at Italian club Fiorentina on loan but has made just 20 appearances for the Serie A club.

He has been keen to come back to the Premier League for some time, despite interest from Inter Milan, managed by his former City boss Roberto Mancini.

Great signing if true.

I'm happy with this to be honest. With regards to wages, it may be slightly high, but I don't see the point in complaining until the transfer window shuts and we can assess how much of our budget was spent on him
