useless
Thanks, I haven't got a crystal ball, Nobody knows how he might turn out, but on the face of it, it looks like a pretty good signing to me.
Czechlad
There is no way Arsenal are in for him after signing Cech. They currently have 3 keepers who could be first team. Chelsea don't really have a good back up to Courtois now though.

Chelsea don't really have a good back up to Courtois now though. Getting Rob Green, apparently. There's a lot of tactical 'signing HG players' going on at the moment. Reserve and third choice keepers are the obvious positions to have these inferior English players...
Popular Post Stevo985 Posted June 25, 2015 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted June 25, 2015 I think spending money on replacing Guzan is madness. But if Sherwood is insisting on doing it, then Begovic would be a very good replacement. I don't buy the Begovic hype as much as some people. I'm not sure he's much better than Guzan, if at all. But he's a better keeper than we are a club right now, so that's good enough for me. I still think it'd be money better spent elsewhere though and I'd be very sad to see Guzan go.
myko
I haven't watched much of Begovic in isolation to be honest. But I'm basing this on the little I have seen. Is Begovic being prone to mistakes, like the save against Weimann last season, not exactly the sort of thing that is being used by some to argue Guzan isn't a good enough keeper for us? TrentVilla Posted June 25, 2015 Moderator Share Posted June 25, 2015 I agree with you re the money, it could be better spent elsewhere but I disagree in regards the merits the two. For me Begovic is a significantly better keeper than Guzan much as I love him.

He makes as least as many as Guzan. He was similarly dropped at the end of last season for a couple of clangers. I really don't think there's much between the two. Before the season just gone I'd have argued Guzan was better.
bradarmstrong_
Would Begovic class as home grown? Saw he joined Pompey as a 16 year old. Similar to how Clichy counts as a homegrown player for Man City due to joining Arsenal as a teenager.
Isa
Begović's standard has dropped over the last couple of seasons, this one just gone in particular. When he plays near his best, he is very capable. Stoke fans have questioned his attitude and commitment recently, with him supposedly having his eye on a move. Which is a concern.

villan-scott Posted June 25, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted June 25, 2015 Begovic would be a massive coup for us, he's been linked with top clubs for the last few summers, so if Tim and Tom can pull this one off is be well impressed.
dudevillaisnice
Aston Villa are keen on Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic but will only be able to land him for a cut-price fee. The claret and blues have registered an interest in the 6ft 6ins ace as the hunt for a No.1 to replace either Brad Guzan or Shay Given continues. Boss Tim Sherwood is determined to bring in a new stopper and would love the big Bosnian on board. Financial restrictions are thwarting his pursuit, though, as Villa are simply not prepared to pay the £10million asking price set by the Potters. Champions Chelsea are also in for Begovic and will have no issues stumping up the cash, but the 28-year-old is not interested in being an understudy. At Villa he would be the guaranteed first-choice and a huge coup for Sherwood as he begins his transformation. Stoke must lower their valuation, though, if Villa are to have any joy in tempting him away. Wages would not be an issue as the club are willing to spend more in that department this term. If there is a stumbling block it would be the initial outlay. Begovic would be an ideal signing for Villa and show a real statement of intent. He is expected to leave the Britannia Stadium this summer after five-and-a-half years at the club. His family are settled in the area and moving to the West Midlands would not be too much of a change from his north Staffordshire home. Whether he would see a move to a club, that has struggled against relegation for the past four seasons, as progression, is uncertain. Sources close to the proven Premier League performer say he is keeping his options open and that a club like Villa would appeal. Sherwood and director of recruitment Paddy Reilly are not yet ruling out any other options but remain focused on recruiting a new addition before the start of the season. At present Given is the club’s No.1 and he said recently that he was hoping push on as first-choice next term. “The FA Cup run gave me a few games if nothing else,” he said. “I’ve been working hard behind the scenes and a lot of people wouldn’t see that, you know on the training pitch and in the gym and different things. “I was just hoping for the opportunity really and thankfully in the FA Cup the run has helped me to show some people that I’m still fit, still able to play I think and I’ve done well in some of the games as well so it’s been a boost for me personally. “I want to keep pushing Brad all the way.” http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-not-meet-stoke-9529159 That should be that. Brumerican
Could spending such money on a low priority position indicate that we have a few quid. ? Maybe I just want that to be the case.

The other possibility is Sherwood sees it as a higher priority than we do.
Isa
Begović is in the final year of his contract and has effectively burnt his bridges at Stoke now. Butland will be the No. 1 and Stoke are counting on his exit. The fee can definitely be forced down and I'm sure the club feel the same if the interest is as serious as reported. BOF Posted June 25, 2015 Moderator Share Posted June 25, 2015 True Isa. My worry would be one of the other similarly placed sides deciding to stump up a few bob just to get in on the act and make it awkward. So there's a time limit for how much hard ball I'd like us to play if we are in for him.

I just feel that everyone at the club knows that they need to up the spending significantly. My gut feeling is that they will.
AndyBM
Given can go but guzan should stay, hes good enough to be no1 and we really shouldn't spend money in an area that we don't need to. do we roughly know how much Sherwood currently has in the kitty? VillaChris
Begovic is a top quality keeper but have a guess what the weakest part of his game is.....
VillaChris
Would be massive if we sign him. I don't understand at that price why Man. United aren't in for him post De Gea and he's better than Mingolet. Spurs might also become an option if Lloris leaves.
