The ISIS threat to Europe

I agree. The plane was inside Turkish airspace. Russia had previously been told to stop flying in Turkey's airspace (their ambassador was summoned to tell him exactly that). The plane was warned multiple times to get out of Turkish airspace. Then it was shot down. That's not me taking sides, just saying what appears to be now established fact.

Nevertheless, Turkey is being used for the smuggling of Daesh oil. Turkey supports islamic terrorists. It's not a good mix.

Russia I think knows their plane was where it should not have been and they've not called it an act of aggression by Turkey, which is a good sign.

I suspect there will be much sounding off all round, and that the Russians will stop flying into Turkish airspace. I also suspect that NATO countries will underline Turkey's right to protect its airspace while having a word about other of their actions.

My comment on the charter was in relation to people saying Russia would now open a can of whoop ass on 'em - they won't because the charter means that if they did we'd have full on war, and neither side wants that. It wasn't to do with the shot down plane.

my money is on Russia "accidently" blowing up something Turkish in the coming weeks

The Russians have been pushing the boundaries and their luck for quite a while now. They have been flying planes near the UK a few times and had to have been escorted away by figher jets, and last week a Russian Submarine was spotted off the coast of Scotland. They have been firing missiles at Syria using Turkey's airspace to do so.

The Russians and Putin have been figuratively speaking flexing their muscles for some time, this recent shooting down of a Russian Plane could trigger further action beyond the flexing of muscles. Worrying times indeed.

Where was the oil going? Who was getting paid and is no longer?

Who caused the oil to no longer flow?  (btw, oh so nice of the US to drop warning leaflets to the "ISIS" oil truck drivers, 'cause collateral damage is bad or something...)

Oh look, the Turks have gone and made a complete idiots geopolitics 101 move, why ever would they do that.

I imagine the Russians will be somewhat ok with all this, the concessions they get in return will be interesting.

Russia are basically at war with everyone in Syria but the govt, so it's perhaps not surprising.  However I'm not sure how the Turkish story of them warning the plane several times works considering how small the bit of airspace they travelled through is and the speed they're likely to have been going.

Now i'm confused - Obama made a speech today that said that everyone needs to be united in fighting ISIS and that the Russians are bombing the moderates (that used to be called Al Qaeda) instead and then he said that this is helping Assad because the moderates are against Assad (which they are, that's why "we" are funding them) but then he said it's important that no-one helps Assad because he's helped the growth of ISIS in Syria.

Now, unless I'm much mistaken, Assad and ISIS are enemies aren't they? Assad is allied with Iran (Sunni?) and ISIS is allied with the house of Saud (Shi'ite?) and Wahhabism.

I'd previously understood that Assad was fighting the moderates who used to be Al Qaeda who are funded by an 'us' to try to get rid of him, whilst ISIS try to take advantage of the situation and grab as much of everything as they can - meanwhile, the Russian's bomb both the moderates and ISIS to try to make life easier for Assad whilst slightly out of shot the Turkish take the opportunity to give the poor Kurds another kicking and Saudi Arabia bombs Yemen back into the stone age and we're not allowed to talk about it.

Simple.

Now thanks to the BBC and President Obama - I'm told that there are a load of Turkish people called Turkmen who live in Syria and are taking pot shots at the Russians and fighting alongside Kurds against ISIS (or the moderates, or Assad, I'm not sure which) and on top of that, Assad is responsible for the growth of ISIS in Syria.

I'm confused.

Surely the only sensible decision is for us to spend billions getting involved?*

(*I don't mean this.)
