TRO
I look at the body language & posture of the managers around us....and a Dark feeling comes over me. useless
The most important stat is that we stuck with Lambert the last two seasons and he kept us up. Lerner will also have in mind that sticking with Mcleish and Houllier during the season paid off as well, in terms of avoiding relegation. He didn't keep us up. Its teams below us that saved our season, will be the same this time, not Lambert's genius. That's like saying to the Champions (whoever they may be at any given time) that they're only Champions because the teams below them weren't good enough. Yes, but that is correct, the teams below them weren't good enough. The main point is the reason we haven't been relegated under Lambert is because he's managed to make us a better team than three other teams in the division. When Usain Bolt wins a gold medal people don't say the other runners saved his Gold because they weren't good enough to run under 9 seconds (or what ever it is). Both Bolt and Lambert finish ahead of the pack because they're the leaders of the pack. (In Lambert's case I'm referring to the bottom three of course) Martinez kept doing that with Wigan until they eventually came up against better teams! Well maybe in the end Martinez wasn't good enough, although it's hard to blame him give the resources available at a club like Wigan Athletic. And it's a similar thing for a club like Aston VIlla as things stand at the moment, it's going to be struggle to keep us in the division whoever is in charge. useless
And yes my Usain Bolt analogy is maybe a little crude reading it back but the main point still stands that it's normal to focus on a team's/individual's achievements rather than to just say they were onlly able to do it because the other competitors weren't good enough. Getting a bit sick of people telling me I'm on a wind-up or something.

thabucks
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31106383 From the BBC "Paul Lambert has lost 49 of his 100 league matches in charge of Villa, who have only scored 98 goals in that period. Only Mick McCarthy, with Sunderland, has lost more times after a century of Premier League matches with the same club".

Cheers for bringing it to my attention.

I think this just goes to show how stats can be misleading. Don't get me wrong, he's definitely been one of our poorer managers, but there's no way he's worse than people who have actually taken us down (at the moment). Stats can be misleading but these are not, this is over 100 games in the league theres nothing misleading about a 25% win rate during that time. It is what it is. I'm not saying hes the worst and im not old enough to have seen some of our other travesties im simply saying he's definitely in that conversation. In a decade or so time when all the kids are talking about our manager being rubbish everyone who lived through the past 5 years will be saying "you never watched a Mcleish or Lambert team!".
Brumstopdogs
The main point is the reason we haven't been relegated under Lambert is because he's managed to make us a better team than three other teams in the division. Is that really a big achievement? We finished 16th and were deemed as under-performing before he joined. After out-spending most of the league we're now still in 16th but are on course to get less points than his predecessor got.
Villan4Life
Looking at that record that shows he is only slightly better than McCarthy over 100 games in Premiership for one club. Way i see it is Mick McCarthy is an EXCELLENT manager in the Championship!! Championship promotion specialist!! But... like some many others he fails to deliver when he gets to the Premiership and is deffo not a Premiership Manager similar to other promotion specialist Neil Warnock and many others who seem get promoted wherever they go!! That shows you Lambert's level possibly a very good Championship manager although hard to tell as he was only there 1 season with Norwich and possibly over-achieved to get to Premiership whereabouts McCarthy has got Wolves, Sunderland and possibly Ipswich (depending on how they do this season) Lambert is definitely not a Premiership level manager Edited February 9, 2015 by Villan4Life

This is a very good point Stop Dogs is making - do you know for instance that in the last three years we've spent well over four times what Spurs have spent. Makes you think! lexicon
Is he balls. I've got a foot in the 'out' camp but there's no way that you can say that about him - if anything he's one of the unluckiest when you look at things like injuries, bullshit red cards etc.
Cliffy Biro
He is one of the luckiest managers in football no question, most chairmen and clubs would simply get rid theres no doubt about that. Managers have been sacked for much less even during Lamberts time here managers have been sacked for less. He's lucky we have a passive owner who is trying to flog us and keep the costs down because otherwise he simply would not be in the job.
