    I had a similar debate with the people I was watching it with. I said at full time we were unlucky and played really well. Queue the argument - we couldn't even beat Russia so we're shit, and how can you say we played well if we didn't win? I tried to explain but the counter argument was always "we didn't win so we're a waste of space and all our players are crap, typical England" etc... It does my head in watching football with people like that.

    Well I thought we played fairly well. We pressed and closed down well, played with energy and passed reasonably well. I thought Rooney had a decent game. We controlled the tempo and we were incredibly unlucky not to have won. Our finishing let us down and we switched off for the equaliser but in my opinion we played as well as I've seen us play in a long time. Maybe im too used to watching Villa though?

    That's one of things I like about international tournaments. The cameramen must be briefed to find the hotties and zoom in.

    Yes, I know the stats but seriously is Gana anyway near as good as Kante? From what I saw last season he's not. Did you watch France last night? Kante was superb, he was breaking up play constantly and his passing was quality, at least until the last quarter. I'm not saying Gana's bad, in fact I'd love it if he stays with us. He'd could be amazing in the Championship. But I'd be surprised if Spurs bought him just based on last seasons stats.

    Definitely, Villa needs to be united for once and a big signing would go a long way to helping that happen. Without it, I fear we'll end up with the fans complaining about our lack of ambition again. There's no guarantee a big name signing will work but the lift it will give the fans will lift the players, which in turn will bring positivity to Villa Park again.

    @av1 agreed, we need a marquee signing to signal our intent. Nothing like a high profile transfer to get us excited and show the world we mean business.

    Maybe we're just waiting for our new batch of megastar signings to join so we can use them to market the shirts. Who'd want to buy a new shirt if the poster boys are Richards, Gabby, Guzan and Bacuna* *I left Lescott out as it's unrealistic to expect a professional photographer to look at him for more than a few seconds.

    I'd be surprised if Spurs wanted him but I wouldn't be if someone like Everton or West Ham came in for him. Spurs, I'd think, would be looking for proven quality at champions league level.

    Some players are excellent at Championship level but not quite good enough for the premier league, particularly if after promotion that team wants to push on and improve. At this moment in time I'd be happy to take players like that. We can always re-evaluate after promotion.

    I won't miss the early season optimism that leads me to pick three Villa players in my fantasy football team. Only to then realise we're shit again and have to remove them, wasting three transfers in the process.

    I hope he stays, his potential could be realised once he's in a settled, well managed team. Even more so in a lower division where he'll get that little bit more time on the ball. If he wants to stay then let's give him another chance to see what he can do.
