Coutinho played quite well tonight so that’s clearly not true. Bailey was also garbage for Deano. Look, I really want him to do well but he just doesn’t look good. Ever! I really hope that he proves me wrong but I just don’t see it.

Utterly bizarre selection that. I am still Gerrard in but it’s really hard to think of any rationale behind that. Obviously we don’t know the tactics to be employed but I doubt anyone will be surprised if Saints keep hurting us on the break! This is a big night for Gerrard. I really hoped he’d learned his lesson but this would suggest not. If more of the same is served up today then I suspect my patience will run out. Hopefully he proves us all wrong. UTV. COYVB

I have heard that a lot but it simply isn’t true. It’s another example of people re-writing history to suit an anti Gerrard agenda. There were plenty of times when he was available but Smith didn’t select him and he clearly didn’t fancy him. In fact, when Gerrard came in, he name checked Sanson as an important player for us who he was looking forward to seeing him in training. Players earn the right to play on the training pitch where non of us see what’s happening. This kid has never done enough in training for two consecutive managers to pick him in a pretty poor midfield. If he was any good he would have moved on by now.

We just need to wait and see who Brighton are going to bring in to replace Potter and then gazump them!

I picked up on that too. I have long thought that he is trying to run before he can walk. We need to become solid and build from there. Young really bought some calm to the team yesterday. He needs to retain his place. Hopefully Dendonker will have a similar effect. Gerrard really needs to stick to a formation, a way of playing consistently. He also needs to choose his team and stick with it to allow them to gel. A solid foundation of Young, Digne, Mings and one of Konsa/Chambers/Bednarek (he needs to decide which one and stick with it). Doug and Boubs must start with either Dendonker or McGinn (again he needs to stick with one of them which would be Dendonker for me). Bailey and Ollie have to start and then one of Coutinho/Ramsey/Buendia (can change depending on the match). We really look like a team that has no confidence. Picking a consistent team that knows they are going to play every week, subject to form, will really help. We need a run now. Win the next two and Gerrard has earned more time.

He was unbelievable tonight. His role is so important in games like that and he absolutely delivered. He knows how to play up front on his own but looks totally different in a two. Hopefully he will get a run of games up on his own now.

Decent half. We got better as the half went on. Young has been excellent. Cash is way out of form and maybe Ash will get a run in the team now. Ollie has been decent too. We need to get Leon and JJ into the game and you never know. Keep it up lads.

He will be a good signing. We are a team that is weak physically and mentally. He will help with both of those. He is also experienced in the league, just about to hit his peak years and probably lives local. This is a good signing. It will hopefully mean we play with 2 defensive midfielders or that Boubs will play further forward.

Totally agree. At £12m that would be a steal. He is big, strong and physical. He also seems to have a bit of mental fortitude. The only negative I see is that he comes a bit of a blocker for Tim getting more game time.

That’s a very good point. I have been supportive of Gerrard but last night was the last straw for me. Arsenal are on fire. If ever there was a night to alter your tactics and try something different, it was then. Also to then watch that 45 minutes unfold and still do nothing was utterly baffling. I am petrified about who will come next though. We seem to be operating on panic mode at the moment so a replacement could be equally as inept.

I’d be happy for him to shag my wife if it meant she was happy watching the villa and didn’t just sit there asking when it was going to finish for 89 minutes.

I would start Young on Saturday. Or maybe Chambers.

This guy has overseen one terrible signing after another. I don’t understand what he does.

Every other team in the league is full of bigger, stronger, faster, more athletic players than us. Our squad has some talent but nowhere near enough PL physical players. I honestly think we are in a relegation battle regardless of who is manager. That’s why I would play Tim now. Every week just get the kid in.

We’ve lost more games than every other team in the PL. We’ve also had a very easy start to the season. Pretty depressing stuff that to be fair.

I hate to say it but he is a super sub. He’s always rubbish when he starts. It’s probably the only thing that Gerrard is getting right.

Really poor player. He was poor before Gerrard and he is poor still. What do our scouting team do?

He’s never been good when starting matches. His better performances have always been as a sub. I feel it’s the same for Buendia too. We desperately need some midfielders tomorrow.
