is it just english directed? if so then alien has to be in the mix

actually there's probably 2 or 3 ridley scott directed films that are contenders

It can be difficult to determine what country of origin a film should be assigned, because the stars may not be, or the money.

I think maybe the director but then you have to include the Hitchcock's American ouvre, and The Third Man would be Hungarian.

It’s a bit of a grey area. If it was based on the nationality of the director, then you couldn’t include the likes of Sense and Sensibility or The Remains of the Day. And I’d argue they’re both more inherently English/British than The Third Man.

Cast, location, director, source material, production company. I reckon at least three of those needs to be ticked to be considered from a given country.

Of course, The Third Man has Trevor Howard in it who will anglicise any film by a considerable amount by mere presence alone.

A quintessential English film. Brighton Rock has to be up there, and another Attenborough film, 10 Rillington place.

The Long Good Friday was an exceptional film in its day. Helen Mirren getting "saved by the bell".

3 corkers there :thumb:

Good call - I think the ending is just brilliant!

British has to include Local Hero, imo.

Not even the best Scottish Film

Best Scottish film is Gregory's Girl.again by Bill Forsyth

Gregory's Girl has Clare Grogan, this will trump any other Scottish film

Ah yes forgot that, filmed in Kirkcudbright. My mate owns two houses on the street that runs up to MacLellans Castle where bits of it were filmed. Freaks me out everytime we go there for a weekend on the pop. Also bought the soundtrack on CD a couple of months ago... strange folk music (you an put the emphasis on either of the first two words)

I saw GG in the cinema when I was a kid. Good stuff. But not as good as Local Hero. In my opinion.

Local Hero had the better soundtrack though.
