He has never been afraid to shoot from that distance, he made his name as a free kick specialist at Southampton before Spurs bought him so it's not like people should be unaware of it either. I know it was the last minute, but there was a very half hearted challenge from the West Ham midfielder (O'Neill?) which allowed Bale to create himself the space to shoot and given how high his confidence levels are at the moment, you'd be more surprised if he didn't take the shot on.
