We were the 5th biggest spenders in the summer.

I don't think 23m in a season is a small amount.

needed to be an ongoing investment. One amount like that in the summer, never enough

You dont throw good money after bad.

If you have lost faith that your manager can do the job long term and will end up sacking him - as we saw with McLeish - why would you back him in the January window?

sack him then. Sack him now if you're not going to back him. Anything else is a derogation of duty

He'd need to find a long term replacement between now and May. That is not easy for anyone to do well....

.... which means it's probably harder for Lerner. I'd wait till May.

BTW, did we sign anyone? I just logged on and I hear rumours.

I got up this morning here in sunny Western Australia, it's yet another beautiful, forecast for 35 and clear blue skys, another day in paradise. I sit down with my breakfast and flip on the TV to Fox Sports 1 and they have a Premier League classic match on, from 22nd August 2010, it's from St James Park and Newcastle's opponents are Villa managed by Kevin MacDonald. All of a sudden my mouth dried, my toast got stuck in my throat and my breathing started to quicken. After a few seconds I calmed myself and began to think, was this the day that turned out to be the turning point in my Villa's fortunes?

Only months earlier we had experienced our most success campaign for more than a decade, our third 6th place finish in a row, only narrowly missing out on 4th, 2 visits to Wembley, although both visits ended in disappointment we had still got there and competed, a young side with real talent such as Milner, Young and Downing. Even though the team had tailed off at the end of the season we were a well liked side that no team liked to play against, things still looked bright.

There were signs of problems though, our manager was well respected in football but could be very dogmatic in his ways and this had caused some problems and cracks were beginning to show, falling out with players, not changing the line up however people played, expensive players on high wages never being played, his lack of overseas signings prefering to stick with high earning expensive British based players. MON had seen off all of the football men on the board apparently insisting that he has final say on all footballing matters. He had also been in charge of spending the generous budget provided by Lerner, some even say he had over spent by 20m. Lerner promotes a little known executive from his days at MBNA to CEO of Villa, not a footballing man but a customer services man, it seems his remitt is to curb the spending.

MON had proved himself to be a hard nosed man over transfers of his best players and with the Gareth Barry saga he showed he wasn't scared to isolate a player if he didn't want to sell. Then came the James Milner episode. In the lead up there had been rumours that MON was actively chasing other opportunities at the likes of Liverpool, it got denied by Lerner who claimed he and MON had a close working relationship. The season ends MON makes the usual spend to stand still quotes but no money is forthcoming. We recieve a massive bid for Milner at the end of the window, I don't think MON wants to sell, but Lerner and Faulkner only see the money and perhaps want to recoup the 20m overspend by MON and tell MON he will not get all the money generated in the sale. MON flips and we all know what happens then just 5 days before the new season.

Lerner appoints Kevin MacDonald as caretaker manager, a Villa man who had worked wonders with the youth sides and had good relations with the players. We started well under KMac with a 3-0 win against West Ham and an away draw in the Europa Cup. KMac looked good for the job he was the popular choice with both fans and players alike.

Then that fatefull day happened in the Northeast. 6-0 to the newly promoted Newcastle, revenge for the game two seasons before that had sent them to the Championship for a year. Ithink this game affected the Premier League for both these teams substantially.

I think Lerner lost faith in KMac's ability to manage in the Premiership. We lost at home to Rapid Vienna and this finished off Kevin as manager even though we beat Everton next game. In stepped Faulkner bright idea in the form of Houllier the very experienced ex Liverpool manager. Kevin was kept on but Houllier went about his new job like a bull in a china shop and the results suffered. So much so that Lerner had to sanction one of the biggest spends in a January window as Houllier brought Makoun and Bent for 30m and loaned in Walker and Bradley. He loaned out Ireland and sold some fringe players who MON had brouhgt on big fees and wages.

Newcastle were also having mixed fortunes which meant they sacked Chris Hughton in December and strangely at the time appointed Pardew, in the January window they received a staggering 35m bid for Carroll whose stock had risen to such great heights on the back of his performance on that August day. Pardew changed NUFC's transfer policy completely and lead them to their highest finish the next season buying good quality foreign players on sustainable wages. Newcastle never really missed Carroll and slowly removed high earning players from their books.

So what would have happened that day if Carew had scored from the spot when the scoreline was 0-0? Would we have gone on the win the game? Would KMac have been given the top job full time? How would our season have transpired without the upheaval Houllier caused and the addition of two more expensive high earners (OK one's goals saved us that season) who are now either a fringe player or a player that hates our club but still picks up a very nice wage? People always talk about what if MON hadn't left or some true 'visionnaries' can see what Houllier was trying to 'build' I wander what if KMac had got the job? Would we have built from his OK start with 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses? These sound like good stats after the last 3 years? Was that Randy's first managerial mistake?

None of this explains Lerners seeming non interest now, but hey ho!

Interesting shout, could have been a sign of things to come.

I sympathise sometimes with Lerner because of the amount of cash he's made avaliable, but still.

Appointing Houllier.

Appointing McLeish.

For ****'s sake what a mess.

**** up in life as well as sports teams.

What a guy.

Well if he treated his wife like he treats our club, he probably spoke to her about once a year, and occasionally bought her some rings and necklaces on the proviso she sold some of her other jewelry first.

Im not going to dig it out - I wasn't a definite "im only going to be here for 10 years"  - Whilst all the villa fans were excited about a billionairre owner coming up, some of the press just had to dig some dirt on Lerner - They were some story he only wanted us to build a super casino......he denied this and said he was here for the long term - when pressed about what long term was - he said  "yes about 10 years"  - it was in with speech about the custodian  stuff.....

Lerner doesn't like the press, and reckon if fans start dragging his name through the mud - he won't stick around to long.

Im convinced hes off sooner rather than later. The longer he now stays, the more cash he will lose, so cutting his losses now would make sense. Lets face it, he does not care anymore, and even his side kick has gone all quiet.

Somethings afoot, im pretty sure of it.
