His record in the league since '01 has him at a goal every 194 minutes. A woeful league campaign last year though, and the first in 4 that he hasn't hit double figures. Scrutinise that record further, and a lot of his goals do come against weaker teams:

That would be true of most strikers.

You are not exactly blowing me away when suggesting that a striker scores more goals against crap defences and less against good sides.

He's a decent striker but not a great one. Probably at his level at a club that finishes 5th to 8th.

True of most, yes, but for someone of Defoe's scoring record his effectiveness against the most competitive teams remains enough of a discrepancy to make it noteworthy, methinks. I have collated some statistics for comparison against players of the same era who have served a similar length of time in the Premiership.

So despite having a superior goal per minute ratio (bettered only by Darren Bent 8)), of the 12 strikers listed above Defoe's performance against the top-quality opposition is bested by over half of them (and that's solely against an isolated demographic of strikers; I've specifically chosen to list only players of a comparable or near-comparable ability to Defoe and left the high-end strikers like Drogba, Rooney and v.Persie out).

In fact, of the 5 strikers with a worse (or similar) strike rate against the top 4, all bar one do have a greater rate of creating chances than Defoe. The only striker from the entire list who is markedly worse than Defoe across all categories is *ahem* Emile Heskey. 2r6dw6q.gif

I rate Defoe, but I don't think he is a phenomenom. My point is though, if Bent gets injured, I worry where the goals will come from, I don't think Heskey, Agbonlahor and Delfoneso (sp) can provide the club with enough.

Plus the argument of 'he scores lots against the weak teams, and not many against the top teams' is true of pretty much every striker. The top teams have much better defences obviously.

Incidentally he has 7 career goals against Aston Villa. Not bad.

Moving on from Defoe....

So Spurs (and Leyton Orient) have won a judgement in the High Court for a judicial review into the awarding of the Olympic stadium to West Ham...

It is seems that they are also close to getting public funding for building their own new stadium in return for dropping the case.

It will be bad enough the the public are funding West Ham's new stadium but to then be funding Spurs is even worse.

You have to feel for Brad Friedel really. Shipped 8 goals in 2 matches but hardly put a foot wrong really.

cant be a coincidence Villa defence gets better and Spurs defence gets worse when he switches

I'm sure that normal service will be resumed, but I am happy to see Tottenhamshit at the bottom. VDV torn a hamstring? Shame. The quicker they sell Modric the better. He is a twitchy faced cockdribbler is Redknapp, glad to watch you losing but no doubts they will spend £50 million before the window shuts.

If there was ever a post to sum up why the t'internet is not the best place to discuss football...

I have to say I'm looking forward to the highlights of the City game later and the twitchathon that will be Harry's face.

Trent, I have missed you!

Just remind me what has Harry ever done for you?

I think Harry should become England manager after Euro 2012?

Anyone agree?

I also hope that Spurs do not sell Modric.

It'd be good for the game if the club stand firm and refuse to sell him.
