It was about, two, two and a half hours and it was very good, very funny and entertaining, though how it will be edited to make an episode of QI I’m not sure. Most of it was Nish Kumar talking about giving dolphins LSD and then wanking them off. In the ‘warm up’ audience participation quiz, I survived 3 rounds longer than the current MrsChris, so bragging rights will become a big thing today. 7 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Popular Post bickster Posted March 22 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted March 22 So I guess I should write about Bill Ryder-Jones last night The missus went so she preferred to be at the back - she’s not very tall. She wanted a wall to lean against, we arrived too late for wall space. I remained polite The venue was new to me, Concept in the old Cains brewery site. It’s just a long room with a a bar at the back. It’s dull and functional, the bar prices were ok for a captive audience - £5 a can and they don’t pull he ring pulls or make you pour them into a plastic glass, which is both good and also hints at their inexperience at running a venue. Anyway, onto BRJ. Obviously I like his music and this isn’t the first time I’ve seen him. The sound was good as were the band. The woman who plays cello is brilliant and the guy who plays slide guitar and gets such a great sound out of it… ditto and those two are the cornerstones of he sound. He works his way though a set that encompasses the latest album and a good number of old favourites. A break with tradition and he plays Two to Birkenhead as the penultimate number (usually the closer) so he closes with This Can’t Go On, the lead single from the current album and for this the single's video plays on a screen. Good gig overall, enjoyed it, if there was one disappointment it was that he didn’t play my personal favourite, Catharine and Huskisson and as the corner of those two roads was only 500 meters away in a straight line, you’d have thought he might but alas no you can’t have everything. Next up for me is a solo acoustic gig by my old friend Mick Head, which is an album preview for his forthcoming release, which just happens to be produced by BRJ (as was the last). Popular Post theboyangel Posted March 24 Popular Post Share Posted March 24 Made the trip to Bristol yesterday to see Yard Act at the O2 Academy. Supported by the surprisingly good Gustaf, a five piece (four girls, one guy) Brooklyn band who were the perfect foil for the headliner. They all looked like they were thoroughly enjoying themselves, especially the percussionist who utilised anything for bells, tins, voice modulator and a variety of squeeze dog toys! I’ve seen Yard Act before and was interested to see how there new more ‘danceable’ sound transposed live. They were absolutely phenomenal with the new stuff seamlessly fitting in with older tracks. The band clearly had a great night too and the capacity crowd were well up for it too! Took my 17yr old lad who, to date was happy standing a little back or to the side to watch gigs. I nearly offered to come out of retirement and spin a few for the warm up! Probably gonna skip the book bit though. There’s also a third volume that he’s just sent to the pressing plant only this week. tonyh29 Posted April 9 Share Posted April 9 (edited) Back from seeing The Libertines tonight in Kingston I’ll be honest and say they are a band that have passed me by previously and I’d put them up there with bands like The Ramones and The fall for being famous for no logical reason but , actually I thought they were pretty decent , sounded loud and pretty tight , vocals were a bit muffled but that could be the venue tbh … I’d definitely go and see them again Edited April 10 by tonyh29 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They were really good though and definitely a band on the rise. Missed the 1st support act but Coilguns were main support and were excellent. bickster Posted April 14 Moderator Share Posted April 14 So, Mick Head playing his upcoming album acoustic style New venue for me Jacaranda Baltic, it’s a basement, it’s got pillars, it narrows towards the stage, sound was good though To get a ticket for this, you had to have already bought the new album which is released next month, so that means for the two of us, we had to buy two copies which is a bit naughty IMO and that will definitely be the work of the devil Pichalinghi. Anyway Mick and Nat from his band run through the album and a smattering of precious songs acoustically and it lasts an hour.or so. Mick is in fine form and there’s a bit of banter A couple of the crowd do that irksome thing of shouting out song titles like any artist is going to change the set list because you shouted out the name of the song and in the case of one knobhead shouting out American Kid (song on new album), he'd just played it a song before you moron Bumped into a few old friends, one of whom I learned has had leukaemia since the last time I saw her, so that was a bit emotional and it was good to see the other friends too. About 2 weeks ago I bought some merch on their site. The next morning the items I'd bought disappeared, and every item was marked as sold out, and they're ghosting me. As it stands, I'm going to rock up at the Pupil Slicer merch stand to kick off with some consumer rights complaints.
