^^ Maybe the 999 is a but much, but probably worth speaking to a doctor mate!

I went out for a short jog last night and after about a mile kept getting little pains in my foot, can only describe them as being like little electric shocks. No idea what is was but decided I couldn't continue which was was frustrating. Anyone experienced anything similar?

I've never had electric shock-type pains. I do get a pain in both of my ankles whenever I run though.

I tend to wear an ankle support on each ankle, every time I run. I went to the doctors last year to get an x-ray, but never went back to get the results

My uncle says I should go to one of those foot-specialists to see if I'm walking incorrectly.

**** this, another injury. Pain in the upper foot. According to my internet diagnosis, either stress fracture of the metatarsal, or extensor tendonitis (I think the latter). Two weeks now and still painful.

Pissed off.

Anyone know about some sort of 'organised ' run near Lichfield today?

Came through a smallish village called Whittington, about 11.45, on bike and some runners just ran straight across in front of me from a side road - no race marshall or 'owt. Just missed them- 'cos I'd got 50 miles in my legs by now, so was starting to slow down but I thought it was a tad dangerous.

ps. There were signs saying "Caution Runners" - perhaps that was sufficient

I've just started training for the Birmingham Half Marathon in October, starting to eat a lot more healthier and been for a run or two but even with sufficient warm ups and warm downs I'm still finding it a strain on my calfs and hamstrings if I do anything more than 2-3 miles. I've never done any running before in my life really apart from when I used to play football about 5 years ago and during P.E at school but since then I've never thought twice about it. Any tips on what to eat / how to train more efficiently? I want to be running 15-20 miles in one run by the time the marathon comes around as it's 13.1 miles.

It was the Lichfield half marathon.
If that's the case, and there was an un-marshalled road crossing, that's disgraceful. They shouldn't be allowed to host another race.

Well I was surprised but as a (sort of ) competitor in another sport, I know that one can sometimes become pre-occupied with the event. I also know that competitors dont always take any notice of marshalls.

I certainly wouldnt "report" the incident or anything but blimey this woman (who ran out in front of me) came pretty damn close.

Garmin. That is all.

I ve also noticed that you can get iPhone apps, which either being free or not much at all. Obviously not quite the same but a start...

OK, purchased Runmeter for the iPhone. Took it out on a run today, and for £2.99 I am impressed. Loaded up my results to dailymile. It allows you to record training runs and then you can see how you do against yourself. You can get free ones which are probably useable, but this seemed to do everything I wanted.

Really getting the running bug

True. I've marshalled a lot myself and I know this to be the case.

I haven't gone running all week :( I had to work later at my night job and earlier at my day job for every day except this one.....I was just tired and didn't run. But there WILL be running again next week. Actually I will probably start back tomorrow.

You will find it hard on your calfs at first. I think the biggest thing you learn when running is finding your technique. Warm-ups and warm downs aren't really required during the summer, just go slowly to start with and try and walk for the last 2 minutes of a run.

Make sure you get some good quality cushioned running shoes. Normal trainers don't have anywhere near enough support. Something like this http://www.startfitness.co.uk/product.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=&P_ID=42620

Next, when you go out running, start VERY slowly. Almost walking pace. Go very floppy and completely relax. Wait for your second wind (about 5 to 10 mins in) where you notice yourself suddenly warmed up and finding it a bit easier before expending any real effort.

Go out for 1 long run a week, probably on a Saturday. Then do 4 miles every Wednesday. On Thursday do interval training for whatever you can manage.

Work up through 3, 4, 5, etc miles on a Sunday up to 10 miles 2 weeks before the event. For a half Marathon you don't want to do any more than 10 miles. Save yourself for the event. The week before just do 6.

15-20 miles is a long, long way and is unrealistic for what you say your stage is.

When you run, just make sure you do the distance. It's about getting your legs used to the distance, not about tearing them to pieces each time. If you have an app on your phone then aim for 10 mins/ mile on runs which aren't interval training. If you have to walk for the last mile that's fine.

Hope this helps. Have fun running! I love listening to my tunes feeling the sun beating down on me while running, then being relaxed for the whole night after.

Wonder if anyone can help with this medical query?

I'm training for a marathon in October. I've been running for about 3 years but only short distances apart from a half-marathon I did in 2008 and the 3 peaks in 2009 (kinda related).

I can currently do about 6 miles comfortably, probably 10-13 at a push.

Last night I pushed myself a bit harder and when I got into bed on the night I could feel a slight pain from my heart with every beat. Not related to breathing or anything else, just every time I could feel my heart beating, I could feel slight pain from definitely my heart with it.

I've previously had ECGs and two 24 hour ECGs for heart palpitations. They've never found anything wrong, it seems to come and go with diet, so I found if I'm not stressed it lessens the occurrences and it seems to be quite a common thing anyway. They two did blood tests last time, they reckon neither showed up anything (I assume Cholesterol, diabetes, etc.)

I've had this slight heart pain before and it seemed to be when I'm eating less / less sugar during the day, go for a run and just before I go to sleep it happens.

Now, to improve muscles you have to damage them for them to rebuild stronger. The heart is a muscle so you'd reasonably expect to get some pain after pushing yourself hard. But every single bloody web site just goes straight for the alarmist 'Call 999 now!'. Oh yeah, when resting my heart rate is really slow, about 48-50. Apparently this is fine with no other symptons...

Any thoughts?

If anyone's interested I'm still here ;)

I think it was from my chest infection I had at the time. The training is still going great and I don't really get this any more.

My running is going okay, really enjoying doing the couch to 5Km training on ipod as it really helps to motivate me to go further. No where near as good as anyone on here but so far I'm on week 5 and running for a constant of 5 minutes with 1 minute walk 3 times and feeling much better for it.

Fingers crossed I will be able to run the 5km race I'm doing in June none stop! I am enjoying it though which has to be a bonus!

I got going using Couch2 5k, thought it was brilliant. You'll have no problems doing a 5k race comfortably if you stick with the program.

Need a bit of coaching guys.

My run is in a week (next Sunday)

What should I be doing this week? Should I rest completely for the week? Should I do a 10k on Tuesday and then rest until Sunday?

Should I do a couple of short runs just to keep me going?

Also, anyone got any advice on what I should eat the day or two before the race so I have plenty of energy?

Thanks all
