Running

Recommended Posts

Who does it, how long for, where, why, what gear do you wear?

I started a few weeks ago (just before I stopped smoking) and I love it, I'm doing it so I'm in better shape for football, but bloody love it.

Who else is on this running tip?

Me, as long as it takes to get away, from the bank to my house, if I told you I'd have to kill you, plain clothes and a balaclava.

I've said too much...

Yeah I run, 5 times a week, and the most important thing is to have good, fitted shoes, I wear these

I run about 10k's a time, and make it all off road, running on concrete/road surfaces is bad for your knees.

I recommend a camelback - I don't leave home without it.

I'm afraid, being a girl, I have a rather wonderful treadmill. It's far too cold / rainy to be doing road running.

Asics or Adidas trainers, the expensive ones. Otherwise my knees cave in. Running is my way to clear the head and loose the fat. Eating is too good to give up!

5-6 times a week, but I's been almost a week now since my last run because of a slight cold. Looking to get out tomorrow evening again.

Run........ now people why would i intentionally run... its not like i live in the middle of Lozells and will need to run from pimp daddies! (pml)

Run........ hahahahah it would be like Jade Goody getting her bits and bobs out again... funny for all of 2seconds until you realise what the hell you are actually laughing at, then feeling ashamed for ever setting your eyes on such a thing!!!

I go about 3 or 4 times a week - usually do 6.5 to 7 miles in 45mins

Did the Birmingham half marathon in October and finished 250th out of 9000 runners in 1h32min

my PB at Half marathon is 1hr 26m.

had become a bit of a chubster 2 years ago but managed to lose 3 st since then mainly through running - still eat loads o crap though.

Ultimate goal would be to run a sub 3 hour full marathon but being a new daddy makes it harder to be able to dedicate to time to train for it properly..

Don't think I ran in 20 years till this time last year, then a mate dragged me out one night and I got the bug for it. Did the Brum half marathon in 1hr 44min this year. I run a couple of times a week between 6 and 8 miles. Gonna do all the organised runs next year (Sutton fun runs, half marathon etc). Feel so much better for it.

Asics trainers for me.

Whatever you do - get the best trainers you can, from a real running shop - the sort where they video your feet as you run. Anyone else is just guessing at the support you need. And expect them to be changed every six months or so depending on usage. Also (odd as it may seem) check your socks....

You RANG, Sir?

Trim morphs into Captain Spearmint, I'm impressed. I'm also massively impressed with Corleone's times, I can't compete with that.

I do about 20-25 miles a week in training, plus races about every 4-6 weeks (5K, 10K, half-marathons, etc. plus local cross-country league stuff). My 10K PB is a fairly mediocre 43m 22s, but bear in mind I didn't (re-)start running until I turned fifty.

But yeah, the advice here is all good - get decent shoes, don't overdo the buildup - you should increase your speed OR your distance (no more than 10% per week), but not both at the same time. Nick has a point about off-road, but latest research suggests a bit of hard surface impact is actually good for your joints.

Get a copy of Bob Glover's book "The Competitive Runner's Handbook", check out the Runners World UK website. And enter some races.

And the advice I always give in these threads - join your local running club. Good advice, competitive incentive and (if you're lucky) a good social craic.
