For some reason that I am genuinely unaware of, the contractor and building owner decided this building needed an official public opening. I mean it was a private business, it wasn’t like the House of Lords or Big Dong Tower or anything, it was just a private business in the vicinity of Parliament. Anyway, it got weirder, they arranged for Betty Boothroyd to be the first person to have a go in the platform lift. It got stuck. Half way, which was no more than 500mm off ground level, or 500mm up to the next level. But too far to ask Betty to jump. So they had to call the fire brigade to get her down the 500mm.
