Incredible we live in era now where Italy don't even qualify for World cups anymore and Germany keep going out in group stages. Good job Fifa aren't messing with the formula for 202....oh.

Amazing stuff from Japan. Even 20 years ago before they co hosted they were seen as a minnow on the world stage and their players were just marketing tools when european clubs signed them.

Now they are a regular last 16 team and have good strength in depth in most areas of their squad. Croatia game is winnable so they have a shot at making quarters for first time.

Not sure how Germany have stopped producing defensive players and is whats costing them. One of the best attacks around but weak in midfield and defence

They really should just stick Kimmich at RB or wherever he's played for periods for Bayern, their full backs are generally average nowadays.

They still have good players in final third but think it's just a case of they've lost their fear factor.

In terms of tournaments they're back where they were in the 2000-04 period when they went out twice at euros group stage. Made the World cup final between that but they did have a pretty easy run to that final.

Funny thing is, I said to someone previously whilst Spain were thrashing Costa Rica, that we need to see them against better opposition, to which they replied, somewhat frivolously, "like Japan?". To which I now want to say, "yep, absolutely Japan.

You couldn't make it up.

Is that supposed to show the ball crossed the line? Because it doesn’t.

”let’s see if Peter Walton can shed some more light on it.”

Lads, the ball didn’t cross the line for ****’s sake! What’s so hard to grasp.
