Star Trek: Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations

Some age old Star Trek questions -

1. Why does the artificial gravity rarely fail? Even on dead ships it seemingly always functions.

2. Shouldn't the holo-deck be banned? It malfunctions so often.

3. Why have lifts when you transport around the ship?

4. When all weapons are down, wouldn't transporting an angry tiger onto the bridge of an enemy ship be a decent option?

Wrath of Khan is one of the greatest movies ever made.

Ironically, this film might be the reason I've never liked Star Trek.

This film was my first introduction as a kid and I absolutely loved it.  After that I found anything else Star Trek related incredibly boring (my satisfaction needs back then were very basic, i.e. lots of fighting bits).

As such I always had this probably unwarranted aversion to Star Trek and never really gave it a chance as I got older.

My pet hates are any episode where the plot revolves around "parallel universe", "holo-deck malfunction" or "time-travel".

Holodeck-gone-wrong episodes are the worst. I mean, it happens so often that I can't believe Star Fleet actually allowed the things on their vessels at all!

I'll forgive the DS9 parallel universe episodes where you've essentially got Kira turning into Dr. Frank N. Furter.  Cracks me up without fail.

The mirror universe episodes are pretty good though, they have been consistent throughout Star Trek in terms of it being a very specific universe with consistent storytelling, right from the first appearance (with Spock's beard) through even to Discovery.

The time travel/timeline change episodes should not be conflated with the mirror universe which is a whole different thing.

As you can see from my avatar, I am a fan of DS9.  I love the portrayal of the political side of war.  Its closer to realism than the traditional "good guys v bad guys" storyline of most Sci Fi.

Garak has to be the best Star Trek character ever.  That's an amazing achievement for a humble tailor.

Loved Ds9 when it came out (quite possibly just for Dax) and loved it even more on watching more recently.

Garak is a fantastic character and one that grows the more you watch him.

The short time he's in the war room he's able to convey so much.

I also love how he developed things like his own claustrophobia into part of the character.

They were also able to develop the Ferengi from bad B-list villains used for just comedic purposes into genuinely interesting characters.

Jeffrey Combs was also fantastic as Weyloun and all the other various characters he's portrayed.

Really pleased to see the love for DS9 in this thread, clearly you are all individuals of great taste and class. The beautiful multi season story arcs are a thing of wonder. Although as we are all Villa fans perhaps that was to be expected.

I have been re-watching  Enterprise in the mornings on Sci-fi, first series is still a bit rough, but certainly better than the first run through. TNG is still one of the best over 'monster of the week' shows ever made.

It is a real shame that the latest few iterations just seem to have missed the mark. What ever TNG and DS9 have especially is missing from them and it makes me sad.

Also big shout out to the Orville  - if people haven't seen it, it is the most TNG like show made in recent years and well worth a watch to scratch that itch.

I'll take any of those over Wild West or 1940's private eye film noir episodes.

Agreed about The Orville. Probably the best Star Trek out there at the moment. I can't stand Discovery myself, I've tried and tried but it just feels... wrong.

Season 1 of Picard was very poor, but S2 has started really well, so I've got high hopes that they have worked out what to do with it now.

And, unexpectedly, I love Lower Decks. It has more Star Trek per millisecond than any other series, and is clearly made by people who deeply love the show. Mariner Beckett is to me everything that Michael Burnham should have been.

I haven't seen Prodigy yet, but I have heard good things about it.

And I'm hoping Strange New Worlds is going to be good, although the fact they've already given in and announced Kirk will be in it makes me a tad concerned. I just hope Kurtzman can be kept at arm's length...

1. Made in Japan

2. No, it's the entertainment centre for bored people living on the ship for a long long time.  Made by Meta.

3. Retro design. Makes travelling around more fun.

4. Tigers became extinct in the 22nd century.   Anyway, unless shields are down or broken, you can't just transport over onto any enemy ship's bridge.

I tried TOS a couple of years back but it was a little too dated for me. I've started a watch of TNG, on a period-accurate TV even, and it's just so...nostalgic, even though I don't think I've ever watched it. So good. I can't believe I've ignored this for so long. Even the best SW movie pales in comparison, and I'm only a few episodes in!

TNG just gets better and better as the series progress. Once the Borg appear and you hit Best Of Both Worlds it really kicks into life.

It also has some of the worst episodes ever conceived (Crusher and the space ghost soft porn episode springs to mind!!!)

The Inner Light is a triumph of an episode, so smart and thought provoking and emotional.

And the episode Darmok, although slightly laughed at at the time, turned out to be very prescient in predicting the way we now routinely communicate using memes and GIFs. And of course has given rise to endless quotes.
