The Hypocrisy of FIFA

In purely footballing terms this has actually been a great World Cup so far, with the final round of the group stages provided some incredible drama. FIFA should take note and stick to the current format. They won't but they really should.

Has it?

I think it's been OK and pretty much like the rest of them rather than standing out, I'm leaning towards this having an above average number of 0-0s at half time

Great news everyone. Infantino has taken another page from the Putin book.

The twist: Infantino can lead Fifa for 15(!) years

DOHA. A Fifa president can only serve 12 years. Not Gianni Infantino. He gets three extra years - and can retain power for a total of 15 years.

When Sepp Blatter's successor was to be appointed at an extraordinary conference in February 2016, the choice fell on Gianni Infantino. The 52-year-old with roots in Italy and Switzerland received 115 out of 207 votes. In the same year, the rules for how long a Fifa president can be in power were changed. A president can now only be re-elected twice, which gives a maximum period of twelve years. With that in mind, Gianni Infantino should therefore have to step down in 2028.

Fifa has decided at a meeting during the World Cup that Infantino's first three years, until he was re-elected at an ordinary congress in 2019, do not count. Therefore, the 52-year-old can be re-elected in both 2023 and 2027 and thus remain in office until 2031. He stands as the only candidate for re-election next year.

Statement from NZF on media reports of Visit Saudi involvement in FIFA Women's World Cup

New Zealand Football have been made aware of media reports suggesting that Visit Saudi, the official Saudi Arabia tourism authority, are set to be announced as an official sponsor of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, the largest women’s sporting event in the world.

If these reports prove correct, we are shocked and disappointed to hear this as New Zealand Football haven’t been consulted by FIFA at all on this matter.

Former French FA president Noël Le Graët who just got sacked due to years of alleged sexual harassment and poor leadership has already got a new top job working for FIFA in Paris.

Because of course he did.

Four-team groups is obviously the right call but the number of games is getting out of hand, and the format for third place qualifiers -- if the same as in the 24-team Euros -- is awful.

Choosing Adriana Lima as an official ambassador for the Women’s World Cup went down just as well as one would have expected. Anti abortion and starvation-diet before fashion-shows screams women football.

Infantino: "When you get to meet Adriana, you feel right away her warmth"

Its only 104 if you assume they stick to a round of 16.

Only having 12 winners and 4 best placed runners up from the 12 groups is going to leave a lot of teams knocked out at the first hurdle.

This also negates the reason they want to keep the groups of 4 setup where you had groups going down to the wire.  In this setup you'd have to play every last game at the same time as teams from other leagues can benefit from playing later and knowing how many goals they need to win by to guarantee a second place qualification. Leads to the potential collusion they like to avoid.

The number of teams they've gone with just doesn't lend itself to leagues of 4. They've messed up.

It will be a four team group stage for the first 48.

32 will get through for the second round. 16 for third, and so on. More games, more money for FIFA. Who cares if the players don't want it.  As a concession, they will get rid of the third place play off to say look we have reduced matches.
