If I was a manager I'd react badly to that question. The "Did you notice" part is a bad choice of words for a question to a manager. You're never going to get a good response leading the question with that.

I do agree. But, this isn't a one time thing. Buendia coming on and impressing and then not playing again is becoming a bit of a theme. I think at this point it's a justified way of asking the question because it seems that either he doesn't notice, or that the performances aren't good enough for what Gerrard deems worthy of a start.

Or he's just picking his mate instread?

He'll start tomorrow, even Gerrard isn't that thick.

Coutinho picking up a knock and being subbed early last week is perfect to leave him out this weekend and give Buendia the role off the two strikers.

Last season Coutinho was left on the bench for both Burnley games so we really need to go back to that arrangement. Coutinho can still have his moments but he just hasn't been that effective v the poorer teams in the league, was probably our worst player v Norwich end of last season for example.

Reporter: "did you notice Emi Buendia's excellent performance when he came on as sub versus Everton?, has he done enough to be considered for a start?"

Gerrard (spikey response): "did you not notice Bailey's performance when he came on as a sub also?, his was positive as well".

I mean.

Why would you say that?

Absolutely no need to respond in that way i dont think.

Its a politicians response because he can't justify his decision. Instead he just deflects the question so he doesn't need to give an awkward answer.

Gerrard said Buendia is "pushing" for a start, confirmed for bench again then 🤣

I hope it's just a ploy to keep Palace guessing. Personally I think Buendia is nailed on to start.

He is spikey because he wants to play his expensive mate Coutinho but knows damned well Buendia is better, but cannot defend his constant decisions to play Coutinho over him..

Maybe he just doesn’t want to announce his lineup for tomorrow…

This makes a lot of sense.

If Buendia starts tomorrow it will set Palace a different set of problems to the ones Bailey will set them.

I've been very impressed with Buendia when he comes on as a sub as his skill and non stop aggressive style must be a real pain for tiring defenders.

With five subs this season there's a case for using 30 minute specialists against tiring defences, and I think Emi and Leon may be more dangerous in the last thirty minutes of a game than the first sixty.

Buendia and Bailey are both terrific players and I have no problem with them starting, but I honestly think we may collect more points by strategising our use of them.

I've just watched it myself. The press reporter did not say "Did you notice" at all - he asked it in a very fair way - Gerrard is the one who replied with "Did you not notice?"

What are you lot implying? He clearly stated in his presser there are no ‘favourites’, and I for one dont believe him.

And he said that without even being asked about having favourites - bit defensive.
