LondonLax
Things are looking a bit spicy in Belarus at the moment! Can anyone tell me how this ends? Are we looking at a rerun of Ukraine? Quote Vladimir Putin has offered to help ensure Belarus's security, according to its president Alexander Lukashenko, as pressure builds on the strongman leader and opposition protesters prepare for a show of force Sunday. Thousands demonstrated in the capital Minsk Saturday after main election challenger Svetlana Tikhanovskaya asked supporters to rally over the weekend and keep alive a movement that poses the biggest challenge to Lukashenko's hold over the ex-Soviet country. https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2020/08/16/belarus-leader-says-putin-offers-help-as-pressure-builds-a71160
villa4europe
She was on the news here last week, 37 years old, human rights activist with no history in politics, her husband was meant to be running but he got arrested, 2 other potential opposition politicians were barred from running... The election has happened, she lost under ropey circumstances by a huge margin and has since had to flee the country, she's now released a video saying she won and theres been a cover up Putin getting involved and standing by his guy won't make things look less dodgy
LondonLax
The opposition rally in Minsk today was 5 times the size of the official government rally, even though the government had bussed in supporters. The people will be getting confident, the big question is how Putin reacts.
StefanAVFC
Surprised there isn't a thread on this, considering the 'election' last year. But they've hijacked a Ryanair flight from Greece to Lithuania with a fighter jet, to arrest a Belorussian dissadent. And weirdly, Ryanair are covering it up Edited May 23, 2021 by StefanAVFC

Also a compulsory sight seeing tour of Minsk at £40 a head but it will be in really small print on the website

I believe I did start a thread last year about the election and subsequent protests I guess people were a bit preoccupied with the Covid thread as it didn’t see a lot of love at the time.

Which is bizarre cause nobody plays tennis here.

villakram
Remember that time the Bolivian president's plane was forced down in the democratic EU at the behest of the democratic USA lead by saint Obama. If you answered yes, off to room 101.

The strange thing is while Obama was to the left of the Republicans, he still is very conservative by western standards. Americans have a really strange perception of the Democrats as being socialist.
