I’m half expecting by tomorrow morning someone in here will be be raving about Anne Widdecombe’s carnal appeal.

I misread that as canal appeal, and I thought, oh that's nice, Anne is organising some kind of cleanup or litterpicking event for our historic waterways.  Time for some reading glasses.

That works too. Her ‘canal’ has probably seen maintenance and usage drop as dramatically since WW2 as the literal ones.

Indeed.

That doesn't mean that there aren't very legitimate questions to be asked about the spending pledges and the manifesto 'aspirations' (and that includes the points that the IFS have raised, for example) but it could all be conducted in less wild way.
