Ronaldinho at his best was ridiculous.

Ronaldo x2, Messi, Ronaldinho and Zidane are probably the top 5 I've seen.

I'd put Nesta in the conversation, but it's impossible to really compare defensive and forward contributions.

Nice to see a centre half get some love. Franco Baresi is without a doubt the best centre half I've ever seen, an absolute genius.

Kaka' is another who, at his peak, was unstoppable. He only had 3/4 really great years though, but pretty much single handedly won the European Cup in 2007.

I love this goal. Kaka absolutely skins (teenage) Messi before scoring. He was so good at those driving runs though central midfield, he had the pace to run away from people chasing him and the ability to beat anybody with a trick. Shame his knee exploded when he joined Madrid because he was a wonderful player.

Kaka goal at Old Trafford was awesome. His character for a tough challenge was questioned by idiots Keys and Gray as he wasmt Rooney but he walked through 2 United defenders to score

Think he finished the job at San Siro

McGrath was better. 😎

Sadly I'm too young to have really seen him play. I've seen highlights and the Ireland-Italy game but not a great deal in the flesh. I know villa fans have a huge respect for him, but how good was he? Was it fair to call him the best defender in the world, just prone to mental health and injury problems, or top 5 etc?

His turn and pass for Crespo's goal in the 2005 Champions League final is one of the best things I've ever seen.

he embarrassed Gerrard in that 1st half and destroyed the myth that Gerrard was a great central midfielder. Rafa saw that too and never played him in that position again unless had 2 babysitting him

Maldini myself. Swear you could play that man in every single position on the pitch.

I've always wondered about how good Pele actually was.

77 goals for Brazil. Burst on the scene as a 17 year old in the 58 world cup. Kicked off the park in the 66 world cup when there was zero protection from refs. In the 70 world cup he was the outstanding player in the best Brazil team ever. Yes hes a great.

He made a great start to the 1962 world cup scoring one of the goals of the tournament in Brazil's first game before getting injured in the next game against Czechoslovakia. Brazil still won because they had special players like Garrincha (an all time great in his own right), Vava, Didi and Amarildo.

Having done a lot of reading around Pele's career (as well as watching pretty much all readily available footage) it's generally accepted that 1962 was around his peak as a football player and 1962 would have been the true showcase of his talents, such a shame injury robbed the world of being able to see that, if the first Brazil game in that tournament was anything to go by it's fair to say he would have delivered big time. As you point out in 1958 he was a very raw and young talent (but still scored 4-5 goals including two in the final), in 1966 he was brutalised, he will always be remembered for his majestic displays in 1970 (that move against the Uruguay keeper was astonishing and had he scored would have been one of the best all time goals) but that was him no where near his best.

And he was a great embassador for football too. From what everybody says a true gent. Never bigger than the sport and very humble. Yes 62 was Garrincha's world cup.

James Milner has revealed that Lionel Messi called him a ‘donkey’ during Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Barcelona. Messi was furious with Milner at half-time during the first leg at Camp Nou after the Liverpool midfielder clattered into Barcelona’s talisman. After hitting the deck, Messi squared up to Milner but the Liverpool midfielder, who can speak Spanish, has revealed that the Argentine continued his verbal tirade in the tunnel at half-time. ‘He wasn’t happy,’ Milner told the Mail on Sunday. ‘He was giving me plenty in Spanish going down the tunnel at half-time as well. He was calling me ‘burro’.

It translates as donkey but I think it’s also used in Spanish football as a general term for someone who goes around kicking people. ‘I asked him if he was all right, but he wasn’t having it. I don’t think he realised I understood his Spanish.

Ronaldo hat trick for Portugal tonight. He's up to 88 international goals. He's gonna keep playing until he gets the ton, isn't he?

He has 7 internationals left this year, 4 vs Lithuania and Luxembourg. Possible he could get the 100 by Euro 2020

Yeah I was gonna say the same. I'd seen they'd got those fixtures vs Lithuania and Luxembourg and thought he could get most of those 12 goals in those games alone :D

Interesting from Van Gaal and I dont think he is wrong.

Quote

Former Barcelona boss Louis van Gaal has highlighted his concerns that Lionel Messi and Neymar do not contribute enough to ‘team cohesion’.

The Dutchman highlighted the Blaugrana’s failure to land the Champions League title since 2015 and believes that the lack of sacrifice from attacking stars is a major factor in success.

“I believe that every team needs a structure whose purpose is the collaboration between each of the players,” Van Gaal explained in an extensive interview with El Pais.

“Football is a team sport, not an individual sport. In Spain they forget this sometimes because they have stars. I believe that the star must help the team win. And in the world of football this is not common.

“Look at Barcelona. How many Champions Leagues have won with what they say is the best player in the world? Look at Neymar at PSG. How many Champions League have they won? Neymar and Messi…I like them as individual players, not as team players. I believe that in collective games there is nothing more important than the team player.

“One of the best is James Milner. In the final of the Champions League he played as a defender and as a midfielder. It's great that he can offer that aged 33.

“And the forwards? Everyone plays for the team. Salah, Firmino and Mané work very hard in defense because Klopp wants to press. Until a few months ago he saw the light: he understood that pressing is not always the right thing to do, it depends on the conditions.

“His Dortmund was more offensive than his Liverpool, where he learned that sometimes you have to fold a little bit, collect your lines and counterattack. That is good for Salah, Mané and Firmino because they are very quick to take advantage of the spaces behind the rival defense.

“Barça suffered this change. I think Messi should ask himself how it is possible that he has not won a Champions League for so long.

“I am neither in the dressing room nor in the training of Barcelona. I cannot judge. I like Messi as an individual player. He is the best individual player in the world because his statistics are amazing. I like it! But why has not the Champions League won five years ago? Why?

“As a captain, you must ask yourself why the team does not win in Europe. Barça has a wonderful squad. You cannot say that Rakitic is bad, or that Coutinho is bad, or that Alba is a bad player, or Ter Stegen a bad goalkeeper, or Arthur or Vidal ...! I think Messi is also responsible for what is happening in Barcelona. Not only the Coach. Players have a substantial part of responsibility for what happens with the team.

“I remember that Neymar at Barça played in Messi's service. I'm not against Neymar. He is fabulous but in PSG he does not play for the team. And I believe that every player must play for the team. Even Messi.

“They have a staff of 30 players and I think Messi must adapt to the team and not the other way around. Guardiola did play Messi for the benefit of the team but the last Coaches have adapted too much to Messi instead of protecting the team spirit. That is the most important.

“Barça already did what Ajax did because Messi can dribble in tight spaces surrounded by no matter how many defenders. What happens is that not only Messi is able to play like this: Coutinho, Busquets, Dembelé, Roberto and Alba are also creative players in this aspect.

“Ajax had that with Ziyech, Tadic, Neres, De Jong and Blind, who are very creative players to manouevre in tight spaces. Only they do it in their own country, and that is not the highest level. The highest level is the Champions League, and there you must take care of the quality of the rivals.

“That's why Barca lost in the semi-finals 4-0 against Liverpool. If there is a true team spirit, at the highest level this result is impossible. Even in the Champions League it is inconceivable that Barça will lose by that difference with the players they have.”

Four. Barcelona have won five in their entire history.  In fact only Real Madrid, AC Milan, Liverpool and Bayern Munich have been more successful than Messi.
