It's slowly killing top-level football IMO. Games are becoming less about what the players do on the pitch and more about how video officials interpret laws.

Yes. Not saying VAR is perfect elsewhere, it has it's problems everywhere

but why? 

when you watch the world cup you see FIFA with a team of 5 VARs sat in the room, that includes VAR specialists not pitch refs, they then use a different offside system, they use a different approach to talking to the pitch ref and using the monitor, they dont stop the game so VAR check can come up on the screen

why do PGMOL insist on doing it differently? arrogance, ineptitude, corruption or drama? 

personally I think its a mixture of arrogance, ineptitude and drama, yesterday's arsenal v man utd game is absolutely perfect for the product, its part of what makes the PL the biggest league in the world, they've made refs and dodgy decisions part of the monday morning conversation because its good for business

Because we think we're special and rather just implementing VAR as it was tested, we try and do it "better", but of course end up making it far far worse.

It's definitely not corruption. It's just bias and incompetence on a massive scale. I honestly think the worst part is the refs protecting refs nonsense. 

Let refs go to the screen more to review their own decisions, and stop punishing them for making mistakes. I.e. empower them to correct their own decision or stand by it. 

 

Also mic them up just for the conversation when reviewing it

Football refereeing, with or without technology, will never be perfect, never be entirely objective, never black or white. The rules of the game must be applied through a lense of subjective interpretation. Football will never be entirely «fair», referees’ decisions will always be debated and questioned. You try to achieve the unachievable by taking away the most important ingredient in football as a spectator sport: spontanious emotion. 

Not only that, the introduction of VAR has resulted in a reinterpretarion of the rules, to the point where they’ve become almost meaningless. I have no idea what handball is anymore. I have no idea if something is offside anymore, except the most clear cut cases. It’s become absurd, and it’s all we seem to talk about on a monday now. 

Scrap it!

The handball rule was a problem long before VAR - VAR hasn't caused the problem, nor has it fixed it in some cases. In others, it's worked well.

As for offside, we need the automated offside like in the world cup or the CL. I don't know why they are still drawing lines.

Gallagher's problem is simple

its not offside because that's the way PGMOL want to interpret the rule

PGMOL are **** wrong (again)

them thinking that he has no impact just shows these words removed have never played football in their life

Gallagher is useless in that role because he'll always agree with the decision.

At least Mike Dean, from what I've seen, actually disagrees with VAR on soccer saturday, so there's some value in it (even if he is a massive weapon)

I think it was the Man City offside goal against us where Gallagher was defending the referees’ decision on air, then later an apology came through from PGMOL and he started defending the new decision. Absolute crumpet.

I think that was Peter Walton to be fair, but they do pretty much look and act the same.

They really aren’t helping themselves. I get sticking up for the refs when no one else will and taking their side, but Christ save it for the 50/50s and not the blatantly wrong decisions.

Perfectly put. It has solved nothing, and ruined a lot. Before VAR we wouldn’t even be reviewing that Garnacho goal more than once. We’d all be saying “ooo close but probably just onside”. We would never have been drawing these fecking lines. The offside rule has lost all practical meaning and sense.

I’d argue it has made it worse through still frame photos and slo-mo, where you can find «handball violations» out of context. 

And the problem with the offside rule isn’t so much the lines, as how we’ve suddenly redifined the whole rule to protect the refs, to the point where nobody understands the rules anymore. Not even the refs.
