Such a shame the Wagner fella bottled it. He was always going to end up dead but at least he might have improved the world (slim chance but still). Russia is on the ground in Syria on the side of the government (Muslim) against IS (Muslim), it has been a rather significant ally to Syria and has seriously degraded IS in that theatre, it has a key strategic ally in Iran (Muslim) and possibly most importantly right now is trying to reach out to the Taliban in Afghanistan.
