Russia and its “Special Operation” in Ukraine

Russia would need to fully mobilise its male population and leave huge amounts of Russia completely undefended. They would literally need to use everything they have got AND hope NATO stay out of the conflict.

That will not happen.  The loses would be horrendous and it would ruin Russia’s economy and military for decades to come.  NATO could probably prevent it happening using air power alone.

Russia’s future is bleak.  They are fighting an actual war in Ukraine and an economic war against countries that are much richer.   But the cherry on the cake is that China isn’t really supporting Russia.  In fact some would say China are exploiting Russia for cheap gas and oil.

Russia’s still maintaining its public bravado but it’s slowly softening its standpoints.  At the start of the war Putin threaten “immediate and unprecedented action against any country that interferes”.  NATO called his bluff.  Putin said there would be no mobilisation.  There was.  Putin said they would only accept payments in rubles.  That policy has quietly gone.  Putin threatened Sweden and Finland not to join NATO.  They immediately did. Putin then said he wasn’t bothered whether they joined or not as long as they didn’t have nukes based there.

But the most telling factor is that Russia started the war to denazify and demilitarise Ukraine. That aim has changed numerous times.  It’s now a war to defend itself against NATO.  They are also demanding “security guarantees” from NATO.  That’s a desperate attempt to portray this as a victory to the Russian people.

In summary - Russia is absolutely f****d.

Love this summary. Thanks.

On the ‘accidental’ shooting down of planes it was flight 752 taking off from Tehran that was shot down by the friendly fire of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, 176 on board were killed.

Iran had been firing rockets in to Iraq and were jumpy, anticipating a response. After the usual denials, eventually Iran admitted it’s “terrible error”.

By chance, currently reading a book that mentions it.

Very similar to the shooting down of Iranian flight 655 by the U.S., all 290 crew and passengers were killed. The U.S. never accepted full responsibility, but did pay $60 million dollars to victims families.

If Russia only shoots down its own military aircraft then in the grand scheme of things that’s progress.

Turns out good old brownings mounted on jeeps are extremely effective against Iranian drones. We're getting close to the place where Ukraine will start downing 100% of all missiles and drones fired at them. It's essentially Russia's only way to pressure anyone in this war, and they're about to lose that too.

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned but multiple Russian sources have reported that apparently there was a New Year's HIMARS strike on a school where the Russians were housing their mobilized troops along with a large amount of ammunition. Sounds like those troops were all but wiped out.

Russia has built 3 air defence lines in between Moscow and Ukraine.  That has taken 2000 skilled troops away from the battlefront. They have also been forced to utilise much of the equipment that was allocated to defending Russian airspace from NATO.

How the tables have turned.  Ukraine now poses more of a threat to Moscow than NATO.   Hilarious.

If I was Ukraine, I'd send another of those kamikazi drones of theres towards Engels airbase just to test those lines for the Russians, they didn't seem to be able to pick up on it the last few times and they did have air defence then too. Just to keep them on their toes and increasse the chances of the Russians downing more of their own planes

Without being able to verify it there’s been talk of Ukraine hitting a base outside St Petersburg with drones yesterday too. The three lines of air defence seem about as effective as the inflatable air defence around the Kerch bridge.

Also where’s the best place (besides this thread) to get up to date info on Ukraine without using Twatter?

Reddit r/Ukraine but be aware of extreme bias. You do have to apply your own filter but you will get info there from multiple sources including Russian ones

There are also other subs about the war too

Not much left of the 600-700 men in it either

Yeah, initial estimates were 200 troops but looking far more like 500 plus conscripts. Nice New Year gift for the Russian frontline.

You can also use the Deepstate map and open the link to their Telegram channel which much of the frontline news is reported on.
