The Good The Bad And The Ugly

So as part of the bandcamp no fees day, i picked up Marissa Nadlers Covers 2, which includes, amongst others a cover of The Cure's "A Forest".

(no video I am afraid): https://marissanadler.bandcamp.com/track/a-forest

Whilst this cover is a couple of years old, it has recently been tackled by a couple of other bands:-

The Discussion (Laura Pleasants from Kylesa's new band): https://thediscussion.bandcamp.com/track/a-forest-the-cure

Though they have been playing it live, this was released last month.

Then this came out last week from Behemoth which is a slightly different take on it:

Just found it weird to come across a number of different covers of the same song by different artists in a very short space of time!

Behemoth version: Jesus wept that is dreadful, they just soulnd like a band in a soundcheck before the PA has been remotely tweaked

The Discussion: Its like the Cure replaced Robert Smith with three  schoolgirls each singing slightly off key

Marrisa Nadler: Of the three artists I know her the best but even this is muddied

Not one of those is a patch on the original and not one of them really interprets the song in any kind of interesting way. I'm a fan of the cover version but, I'm yet to her a version of A Forest which isn't shit, I genuinely believe it's pretty uncoverable

I’ve learnt 2 things already today, and it’s only 8:20. Never click on anything by “Independent Country” or Behemoth.

I posted without comment. I do not endorse them in any way.

Behemoth as band are fine if you are into Black/Death Metal. They do have some good tracks (The Satanist album is probably my favourite) and some pretty bland stuff. The problem with this is that he got a vocalist from a different band (Niklas Kvarforth from the Swedish band Shining) who is awful.

Definitely agree with this. None of them really do much with the the song.  I ddi discover that Carpathian Forest (another black metal band) did a cover of it which is much better than the Behemoth version at least and probably a bit more interesting than the Discussion or Marissa Nadler's versions, but again doesn't really go much further than the original. Although being a black metal band I'm not sure it will be entirely  your cup of tea ;)

Its one of my favourite songs, Straight to Hell. So much so that I even enjoyed that version.

But... but... its reggae... Hold on, you like songs by The Clash and don't like reggae... Wow that's a massive does not compute moment
