Match 9 - Chimps vs Cheetahs

After the short tournament break, the first Quarter Final saw the Chimps taking on the Cheetahs. The Chimps were expecting a much sterner test than their first round match with the Cheetahs being much more formidable opponents. The Cheetahs, on the other hand, were just hoping to get a full 90 minutes after their involvement in Dolphingate.

 

Much of the spotlight was stolen, in the pregame buildup, by the SIFF president Stevo himself. He was escorted to his seat in the stadium by a swarm of armed guards amidst corruption claims. He was passionately booed in the prematch anthems when his face was flashed on the big screen.

 

Soon, however, he was forgotten as the game kicked off. The chimps were immediately forced onto the back foot by the pace of the cheetahs, their knock and rush tactics proving incredibly effective against a flat footed defence.

It came to nothing, however, as the Cheetahs rued missed chances early on, the Chimp keeper Carli thwarting every shot with amazing agility.

 

Eventually, the chimps wised up to the Cheetahs' speed and played a deeper line. This nullified the Cheetah attack but made it incredibly hard for the Chimps to counter, their lack of pace relative to their opponents meaning they were rarely afforded possession in the opposition half.

 

Halftime came and went with the deadlock yet to be broken until finally, the Chimps opened the scoring. A long ball from Clara found the head of Pankun, who's flick slipped in Caesar who finished with a chip over the advancing Cheetah keeper. For the first time the high line of the Cheetah defence had been penetrated.

 

The Cheetahs reacted in style, using some unorthodox methods of passing but making up for it with their lack of speed they tore open the Chimp defence again and again, but could never find the breakthrough. Several times Carli made saves but the majority of the time the Cheetahs' pace was let down by their lack of control and ability to kick the ball quickly and effectively.

 

As the Clock struck 90 minutes, the cheetahs finally got their striker, Georgio Cheetahlini, clean through. he easily rounded the keeper and slotted home, only to look up in horror and see the linesman's flag raised. Replays showed it was the correct decision, a needless offside from the striker.

The final whistle sounded surely after and the Cheetahs were out. The Chimps march on to the Semi Final to set up a meeting with either the Kodiak bears or the much fancied Kangaroos.

 

Result - Chimps 1 - 0 Cheetahs

Sad to see the Cheetahs go but I thought they'd find Chimpanzees tough opposition. It's alright having speed but you need to be able to do it with the ball at your feet too.

Match 10 - Kodiak Bears vs Kangaroos

The second quarter final saw favourites the Kangaroos face up against the formidable Kodiak Bears.

Both teams were hugely impressive in their first round games and some found it hard to pick a winner going into this one.

 

The game got off to a ferocious start, Wayne Kangarooney had the Kangaroos ahead with less than 2 minutes on the clock. The Kangaroos weathered some early bear pressure and then won a throw in deep into the Bear half. A long through from Roo-ry Delap saw Kangarooney leap high above the Bear defence and hammer home a header from 10 yards.

 

The bears were unfazed, however, and stuck to their game plan, using long direct balls to nullify the extra pace of the kangaroos. Most long balls were cut out by the superior leap of the kanagroo defenders, or Kangazares in the Kangaroo goal. But the bears used their weight and size on occasions and fashioned some chances. Bearhami went close with a crushing drive on the half hour mark only to see his effort tipped away by the outstretched keeper. 

 

The bears were level just before half time, again a long ball was knocked down amd Mario Bearotelli fired home from the edge of the area, the Kangaroo keeper unable to get down quick enough to stop the low driven shot.

 

The second half saw no drop in tempo. The bears had clearly adapted well to the conditions, carrying on their harrying of the Kangaroo midfield and cutting out the through balls for the pacy strikers to capitalise on. The kangaroos, well used to the heat in the outback back home, never relented with their high tempo approach.

 

But it was the bears who edged ahead with little over half an hour remaining. The bears won a corner and the whipped cross was powered home as Teddyago Silva came up from the back and used his power to get to the ball first, booming the volley into the roof of the net.

 

Panic seemed to set in amongst the kangaroo camp for the ensuing 10 minutes, but some measured substitutions from the manager, Kanagaroodi Voller, settled things down.

 

With 15 minutes to go the Kangaroos drew level. A through ball finally penetrated the bear defence and Kangarooney hopped on to the pass, controlled the ball and fired home with a powerful backheel, clipping the inside of the post to evade the outstretched paws of Bear-n Foster.

 

The game looked to be heading to extra time until Kangarooeny broke bear hearts forever. With the clock ticking down to zero he nutmegged a bear defender, drew the keeper out and executed a beautiful lob, the ball just creeping under the crossbar in time to finish off one of the goals of the tournament so far.

 

That was the end of the action as the referee blew soon after and signalled emotional scenes as the bears collapsed in anguish at their untimely exit. Fancied by many, they will have to wait 4 years for another shot. The Kangaroos advance to set up a mouthwatering tie with the Chimps in the semi finals.

 

Result - Kodiak Bears 2 - 3 Kangaroos

I want to enjoy it whilst it's happening, it won't last forever. When it's ended I don't want to say to myself 'did that really happen?' The World Cup when that finished just felt like a bit of a dream to me.

Gorillas v Elephants, certainly the elephants have strength, no doubt about it, but it is physically impossible for an elephant to jump, so shocking in the air, the weight they are carrying effects their agility, there is only one way to vote ladies and gents and thats with the Gorillas. I hope for a trouncing in gorillas favour.

An trunk extended upwards would make an elephant higher than a Goriall could jump, I reckon.

 

That being said, I can't see past the Gorillas. Quicker, more agile, better equipped physically to play the game.

 

But if the Elephants parked the bus then the Gorillas may struggle to break them down.

I am backing Elephants to exploit their generous size advantage and indeed park the bus. The flow of the game risks being heavily trunkated obviously, but some nimble trunk/nose movement's can help compensate for their cumbersome build. Think they'll exasperate the Gorillas into making silly mistakes and leaving spaces open, allowing a late charge for an Elephant to score. Predictions: 0-1.

 

Human's to fall into the pity trap and feel overly sympathetic to the plight of the panda and lack the ruthless instinct to make them extinct (only in this tournament ). Panda's to quietly get along with the their thing, before deftly deploying the "make-the-opponents-giggle-by-sneezing" trick and nip in to score. Prediction 2-4
